Three decades of coaching leads to Hall of Fame honor for Justin Bigsby

Andrea Gallagher | February 03, 2026

Fremont’s Justin Bigsby was inducted into the USTA Nebraska Hall of Fame this past November at the Nebraska Awards and Hall of Fame dinner.

Growing up in Omaha, Bigsby started playing tennis around 12 years old and never stopped. After playing in college, he has since passed on his love of the game to his three kids. He was humbled to be among a select group of players and coaches in the USTA Nebraska Hall of Fame.

"There are so many influential Hall of Fame members that have done, and are still doing, so many great things for tennis in our state and beyond," he said. "And I honestly don’t see myself anywhere near their level of contribution."

Bigsby has coached for close to 30 years in the Fremont area. In addition to teaching English, he is the boys’ and girls’ tennis head coach at Fremont High School. He has a no-cut policy for his tennis teams.

"Cutting kids from my program would basically be telling those kids that I don’t think they should get to learn how to play tennis, and I just can’t do that," Bigsby said.

In addition to coaching Bigsby also helps organize tournaments in the Fremont area as well, utilizing the 12 outdoor courts and five indoor courts.

When looking back at his career, some of the moments that stand out to Bigsby include his collegiate tennis experience and coaching some successful high school players—including his own kids.

"Getting to coach my own children to multiple state medals will always remain close to my heart," he said. "But more important than anything are the relationships I’ve forged over the years.

"Both on a personal and professional level, I can’t imagine life without the relationships I have because of this sport."
