Lincoln Wheelchair Classic Draws Players from Across Region
More than a dozen participants came out to Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln Aug. 27-29 for the USTA NE L4 Lincoln Wheelchair Classic tournament. The event was originally scheduled for Aug. 13-15, but was moved. Players came from all over the Midwest including Wisconsin, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska. Lunch and snacks were provided.
Tournament director Kevin Heim said they have seen a decline in the amount of wheelchair tournaments within the USTA Missouri Valley this year, so players were happy to participate in this one.
“It may be a smaller event this year, but we are excited to host and continue to provide playing opportunities for wheelchair participants,” Heim said. “We anticipate that once word gets out, we will grow the participation next year.”
Players were able to enjoy a free hotel stay at New Victorian Inn & Suites in Lincoln. Following the tournament, players were able to enjoy a banquet dinner.
In Coed A doubles, Taylor Graham and Darryl Rahn of Lincoln took home the title, going undefeated in round-robin play. In Coed C doubles, Brett Wolff of Waupun, Wisconsin and Lily Lautenschlager of Lincoln teamed up and did not drop a set the entire tournament en route to the championship.
In singles play, the Coed A division saw Graham play exceptional tennis - not dropping a set in round-robin play. In the Coed C division, John Walker of Liberty, Missouri took home the title. In Coed 18 & under singles, Lautenschlager cruised to a tournament championship, going 2-0 in the round-robin format.
