Wei Tong Nabs Section Sportsmanship Award
Wei Tong of Omaha was recently nominated and is the recipient of the USTA Missouri Valley Sportsmanship Award for her team spirit both on and off the court. Tong was nominated by Sandra Debrowski, also of Omaha.
“Wei is encouraging, caring and has a passion for the game,” Debrowski said. “She wants to make sure everyone has fun and enjoys playing!”
Tong is a 3.5 player who has been playing for more than ten years, including five years playing USTA Leagues. In fact, she played and/or captained on 10 teams this year!
Her favorite part about playing in a team atmosphere is meeting new people, hanging out with her tennis friends and being able to have a good time on the court while also being competitive.
She was surprised and happy to learn she received the Sportsmanship Award. It’s important to her to play the game fairly, and be kind to her opponents. Her goal for the future is to get her rating increased from a 3.5 to a solid 4.0. She prefers doubles to singles, because it’s less impactful to her knee.
“Besides playing tennis, I enjoy traveling with my family, skiing with my kids and friends, listening to music and hanging out with friends,” she said. “I hope one day I’ll partner with my kids to play women’s and mixed doubles.”
Tong will receive a special care package from USTA Missouri Valley for her accomplishment. If you know anyone who is deserving of the USTA Missouri Valley Sportsmanship Award, please click here.
