Summer JTT Wraps Up With Final Tournament
The USTA St. Louis Junior Team Tennis (JTT) season unfortunately was cut short due to COVID-19, but the season culminated in a fun round robin tournament at Dwight Davis Tennis Center.
Three gender-neutral age divisions took the court for the tournament: 10U, 14U and 18U. The 18U division was further split into three divisions based upon level of play.
Safety measures allowed teams to enjoy play with peace of mind.
“To keep players safe, we limited each team to having four players,” said JTT coordinator Toni McDonald. “We only allowed one spectator per player. We also had a safety check in. We had only three courts per match so that every child was playing instead of sitting around waiting for their turn."
Each team match on the weekend was comprised of four singles and a pair doubles matches. This type of format and the team atmosphere is good preparation for prep tennis.
“JTT is great for players getting ready for high school season. Also gives them playing opportunities in the off season,” McDonald said.
While having a single spectator for players was a bit out of the ordinary, it turned out to be special for one player. The tournament for one 10U player was the first at Dwight Davis. Her father grew up playing on the courts located in Forest Park. He was his daughter’s spectator and took photos. After, the pair celebrated her time playing at Dwight Davis. She said the experience with her dad was just as fun as the match.
