Recap: 2025 Tennis On Campus Section Championship

Josh Sellmeyer | March 07, 2025

Sixteen college club tennis teams representing 13 institutions from across the section recently competed in the 2025 USTA Missouri Valley Tennis On Campus Section Championship. The squads battled for a top-four finish and automatic qualification to the national championships during a fun-filled weekend at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo. on March 1-2.

After two full days of tennis, Washington University in St. Louis, Iowa State University, the University of Missouri and the University of Kansas placed in the top four to advance to the 2025 USTA Tennis On Campus National Championship, which is set for April 2-5 in Rome, Ga. Scott Howes, USTA Missouri Valley manager, adult play, served as tournament director.

WashU captured the USTA Missouri Valley Tennis On Campus Section Championship for the fourth year in a row and seventh time in the last eight renditions of the event. The Bears went undefeated throughout the weekend and defeated Iowa State in the finals, 28-15.

“I’m very excited to go to nationals in Georgia and hopefully we do even better this year,” said Sofia Allinson, WashU captain. “I love competing individually and as a team. It’s really fun for this team sport, which is usually so individual. And also all the friendships I’ve made have been really great.”

Iowa State scored a clutch 25-23 win in the quarterfinals against Saint Louis University to secure a spot to nationals in one of the most competitive matches of the tournament. Cyclones captain Jack Edwards is looking forward to again traveling to northern Georgia with his teammates.

“It’s kind of a dogfight to get here. In the quarterfinals we had a close match with SLU, which was awesome. They were fantastic. They were great sports,” Edwards said. “I’m super excited. We were there last year. It’s a fantastic tournament. It’s run great.”

Mizzou beat its I-70 rival and former Big 12 Conference competitor Kansas, 28-16, to snag a third-place finish. The Tigers slipped by the University of Iowa, 22-18, in another exhilarating quarterfinal contest.

“We’re very excited (to go to nationals),” said Dustin Peters, Mizzou captain. “We haven’t been in a long time so we’re looking forward to it a lot. We have a really strong team this year, and so we’re ready for Rome."

Kansas took down Oklahoma State University 27-16 to advance to the semifinals. The Jayhawks progressed to their third straight nationals after an absence of more than a decade. Captain Sam Freund called qualifying for nationals “the new standard we’ve set at Kansas.”

“The section championships are great,” Freund said. “The facilities are great. Scott, the director, does a great job every year. This is my fourth time here as a senior. The way it’s run is really nice for us, and we’re always happy to come to Springfield.”

All captains and players received gifts for attending, and the top-four teams also earned awards for their efforts. Micah Matthews, USTA officiating growth manager for the section, was on-site talking to players about getting involved with USTA officiating.

Howes credited the facility, officials, participants and USTA Missouri Valley staff members for another excellent year of section championship action.

“A huge thank you definitely goes out to the entire staff at Cooper Tennis Complex for their assistance to make this unique event a success,” Howes said. “Special thanks to Mallory Weber, Steve Webb, John Xu and Kelly Hayes for going above and beyond in the officiating space and for being such gracious hosts. Their efforts were amazing and greatly appreciated.

“We would also like to thank USTA National’s Josh Bramblett and Impact Team Tennis’s Elaine Wingfield for their support of the TOC program. In addition, much appreciation goes to USTA Missouri Valley staff members Mary Buschmann, Marissa Moment Brown, Laura Jager, Josh Sellmeyer and Manon Eilts for helping to make this an amazing event.”
