Celebrating the USTA Missouri Valley connections at the 2025 US Open
The 2025 US Open, which takes place Aug. 18 through Sept. 8 in New York City, is a spectacular experience for those in attendance.
Once again this year, USTA Missouri Valley features several local connections—including officials, competitors, volunteers and award recipients—who are at the Grand Slam event. Here is our roundup of those local tie-ins, and this page will continue to be updated so check back throughout the US Open festivities!
Madison Keys, Jackson Withrow, Cooper Woestendick & Casey Ratzlaff: Competitors
Madison Keys, who hails from Rock Island, Illinois within USTA Missouri Valley, was seeking her second Grand Slam championship of 2025 after capturing the Australian Open women’s singles title in January. She reached the US Open final in 2017. In addition to competing in the women’s singles draw, Keys paired with Frances Tiafoe in the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship.
Jackson Withrow, who was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, went on a fantastic run to reach the semifinals of the US Open men’s doubles bracket alongside partner Nathaniel Lammons. Withrow also competed in the mixed doubles division a year ago. He’ll try to replicate his success this year.
Cooper Woestendick, born in Topeka, Kansas and raised in Olathe, Kansas, qualified for the US Open through the USTA Boys' 18U National Championship. He'll be playing doubles with his longtime doubles partner and fellow American, Maxwell Exsted.
Casey Ratzlaff from Wichita, Kansas is set to compete in the US Open Wheelchair Championships. This year marks the 20th anniversary of wheelchair tennis at the US Open and Ratzlaff, America’s No. 1-ranked men’s wheelchair player, will take aim at his first US Open title.
Officials at the US Open
USTA Missouri Valley once again has five officials chosen to work the US Open, one of the highest honors in the officiating industry. These standout officials have 52 years of combined experience working the US Open.
Sheila Conway (USTA Oklahoma) — 5th US Open
Kim Kilgore (USTA Missouri) — 15th US Open
Cheryl Lady (USTA Heart of America) — 8th US Open
Diane Lawrence (USTA Kansas) — 19th US Open
Cindy Ritchie (USTA Oklahoma) — 5th US Open

Charlie Felker: SuperSport Winner
USTA St. Louis junior competitor Charlie Felker won USTA Missouri Valley’s SuperSport campaign. Felker, 11, received the most nominations from Jan. 1 to June 30 for his exemplary sportsmanship at tennis tournaments. As a result, Felker earned two tickets to the US Open.
Staff & Volunteer Participation
Rebecca Falkner Axelrod, USTA Heart of America executive director, will once again serve at Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day on Aug. 23, this time as the adaptive court lead. And Alywn Mushonga—USTA Missouri Valley manager, regional community play for Missouri and Oklahoma—will likewise serve again at the event. Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day aims to get children excited about tennis, one of Ashe’s greatest passions.
Scott Howes, USTA Missouri Valley manager, adult play, will represent the section at Red Ball Tennis activations occurring Aug. 29 to Sept. 8. And the USTA Missouri Valley Board of Directors will have the honor of attending the US Open in the President’s Suite.
Joe Heydt: Racquet Stringer
Joe Heydt from Bellevue, Nebraska is working his 17th US Open as a tennis racquet stringer. Heydt—who owns the Racquet Corner in Omaha—has strung racquets for 30-plus years. He joins an elite and diverse team of stringers at the US Open who will complete about 7,000 racquets during the course of the tournament.

Althea Gibson- Celebrating 75 years of breaking the color barrier
Throughout the 2025 US Open, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of Althea Gibson breaking the color barrier at the 1950 U.S. National Championships, now known as the US Open.
In 1953, Althea Gibson worked at Lincoln University, a HBCU located in USTA Missouri Valley, as a Physical Education instructor.

Outstanding Facility Awards
Two facilities within USTA Missouri Valley were picked as USTA Outstanding Facility Award recipients and collected that hardware on Aug. 26 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa and Overland Park Racquet Club in Overland Park, Kansas were selected for awards in the category of Large Private Facilities, which includes complexes with 12 or more tennis courts. The Michael D. Case Tennis Center is the home facility for the University of Tulsa tennis teams, while OPRC is a USTA Premier Facility.
Jean Larrick: Champion of Equality
Longtime tennis teaching professional Jean Larrick was selected as USTA Missouri Valley’s Champion of Equality honoree. Larrick and 16 additional women from across the USTA’s 17 sections will be recognized for their leadership and trailblazing efforts on Sept. 4, prior to the US Open women’s semifinal matches.
Larrick—who has coached players of all backgrounds and abilities in Springfield, Missouri for the past 45 years—has also produced a stellar playing career. She has competed in tennis for 70-plus years and has more than 200 titles to her name. Some of her previous recognitions include induction into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame (2025), USTA Missouri Valley Hall of Fame (2022) and Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame (2021).

Stars of the Open
During Fan Week, current and former USTA Missouri Valley players took the court with former pros for Stars of the Open.
Casey Ratzlaff (Wichita, Kansas) and Bethanie Mattek-Sands took on Jack Sock (formerly Kansas City) and Dana Mathewson. Nick Flentie (also formerly USTA Missouri Valley) was part of the officiating crew for this match.
Coin Toss for Anisimova - Osaka match
On September 4, JohnPaul Huston who plays at Edmond Center Court and is part of our Junior Advisory Panel had the opportunity to do the coin toss for the Anisimova - Osaka match.
