Washington University (St. Louis) Claims Tennis On Campus Section Championship

March 08, 2022

It was a great weekend of tennis in Springfield, Mo. as 14 college club-tennis teams from across USTA Missouri Valley competed at the 2022 USTA Missouri Valley Tennis On Campus Section Championship. After taking a year off in 2021 due to COVID, the USTA Missouri Valley Tennis On Campus Section Championship was back in action in 2022.

Teams were vying for a top three finish, and the right to advance to next month's 2022 USTA Tennis On Campus National Championship (April 7-9) at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, FL. The three schools who earned a spot at the Tennis On Campus National Championship are Washington University (St. Louis), University of Iowa, and Iowa State University.

After breezing through the round robin matches, Washington University and Iowa State University faced off in a heavyweight bout to begin Sunday’s play in the championship bracket. Washington University came out on top to secure a date with the University of Iowa in the finals.

After being down early against the Iowa Hawkeyes in the finals, Washington University stormed back to a victory in the mixed doubles match and reclaim the throne as USTA Missouri Valley champions. Simultaneously, on an adjacent court, Iowa State University emerged victorious for a 3rd place finish, defeating the University of Kansas.

In addition to some great tennis, teams also exhibited wonderful sportsmanship and team spirit throughout the weekend. Players were constantly cheering on their teammates when they weren’t playing matches of their own. The University of Tulsa even brought a small “Hurricane flag” to wave after a good point played by their teammates. All teams really exemplified the sportsmanship aspect of Tennis On Campus, but one team earned an extra honor for their efforts.

Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville earned the team spirit award for their wonderful display of camaraderie and team support. No matter the results of matches, the team was constantly encouraging and cheering on their teammates throughout the tournament.

Matches on Saturday were outdoors for the first three rounds. Unfortunately, matches were forced indoors on Saturday afternoon due to rain. Matches continued indoors all day on Sunday. Also, the Missouri Valley Adult League department provided gifts and sweet treats for Tennis On Campus players who stopped by the adult league booth to discuss 'Tennis Off Campus'.

A huge thank you goes out to the entire staff at Cooper Tennis Complex for their assistance to make this unique event a success. A special thanks to Mallory Weber, Steve Webb, and John Xu (tournament official) for going above & beyond, and for being such gracious hosts. Your efforts and amazing hospitality were greatly appreciated. HyVee also donated cases of water, gatorade, granola bars, bananas and oranges for our players. Thank you HyVee!
