On Dec. 2, the USTA's Celebrating Community Champions virtual event honored 2020 award-winners in a variety of service-based categories. In the absence of a 2020 USTA Annual Meeting, each honoree received a surprise virtual call from a tennis legend as a thank-you for their contributions to growing the game of tennis.
The David & Lisa Minihan family of Edmond, Oklahoma, are the winners of the 2020 Ralph W. Westcott USTA Family of the Year Award.
Since 1965, the annual award is presented to a family that volunteers its time to promote amateur tennis, emphasizing the theme that tennis is a family game. The Minihan family has been involved in the Oklahoma tennis community for over 20 years.
David, a lifelong player, currently serves as USTA Oklahoma Executive Director. His company manages Kickingbird Tennis Center in Edmond, Okla., while Lisa is the Director of Athletic Operations at Oak Tree Country Club. They have passed on their love of tennis to their two daughters: Aspen (14) and Chloe (10), both of whom volunteer and compete in junior events.
The family all volunteer their time with their “Play It Forward Tennis Foundation,” a USTA NJTL program which focuses on diversity and inclusion, reaching out to those with special needs and those that might not have the means to afford tennis instruction.
“This is a family that lives and breathes tennis,” said Craig Morris, USTA Chief Executive, Community Tennis. “Their endless contributions to the sport and passion for helping others makes them deserving of this award.”
