Decades of volunteer work to grow the sport of tennis both locally and nationally have earned Christine Costamagna the Barbara Williams Service Award.
Established in 2003, the award honors the late Barbara Williams, a longtime USTA volunteer who unselfishly gave her time and energy to promote the sport of tennis. It recognizes a female volunteer who, through her leadership and by her example, has encouraged and inspired others to become volunteers and assume leadership roles at the community, section and/or national levels of the USTA.
Costamagna has left an indelible mark on the tennis community through her extensive involvement with USTA Northern California and USTA national office. She currently serves on the USTA Northern California Board of Directors and chairs the USTA’s national adult competition committee. Beyond her USTA roles, Costamagna coaches high school tennis at the Branson School and has volunteered for many years with Special Olympics Northern California.
As chair of the Adult Competition Committee, Costamagna was instrumental in the creation of the NTRP National Championships and the overall restructuring of the USTA’s adult tournament and ranking system. She is a successful high school tennis coach, leading the Branson School to multiple championships in recent years, and she has been widely heralded for her work in the adaptive space, specifically working with tennis players with intellectual disabilities.
“Christine’s decades of service to the sport of tennis has unquestionably impacted players at every level of the sport,” Craig Morris, the USTA's chief executive for community tennis, said. “Tennis across the United States is better off thanks to all the work Christine has done both in her community and in service to the organization at a sectional and national level.”
