Texas Women, Southern Men Win 18 & Over 5.0+
The USTA National Campus at Lake Nona in Orlando, Fla., was abuzz with excitement on Sunday as the Southern section men's team from Lexington, S.C., and the Texas section women's team from Addison, Texas, proved their mettle on the courts, taking home the USTA League 18 & Over 5.0 national titles.
The Southern men's team, based out of the Topspin Racquet and Swim Club in Lexington, S.C., defeated a team from San Francisco, 2-1, to take home the crown. Earlier in the day, Southern managed a win against the Florida section team from Tampa, Fla., 2-1, securing its spot in the final.
Captained by Chris MacDougall, the Southern team features members Nicholas Lombardo, Justin Downey, Luke Whiteside, Gregory Artzt and Kyle Koch.
The Texas women's team, based out of the Greenhill Tennis Center in Addison, Texas, took home the title after defeating a team from Fountain Valley, Calif., in a tightly contested battle, 2-1. The Texas women punched their ticket to the finals by defeating a team from Oakland, Calif., 3-0, in the semifinals.
The Texas team is captained by Andrie Meiring and features members Teri Ware, Amy Allin, Ashley Turpin, Mahuiyang Rong, Irina Lykina, Barbora Vykydalova, Alexandra Khadzhyan and Ruth Brown.
