U.S. brings home 11 titles from ITF Masters World Individual Championships

American athletes are continuing to prove that tennis is the sport for a lifetime on the world stage.

 

U.S. athletes brought home a total of 11 singles and doubles titles from the recently-concluded International Tennis Federation (ITF) 65-, 70-, 75-, 80-, 85-and-over World Individual Championships in Manavgat, Antalya, Turkey, after winning four titles in the World Team Championships earlier in March.

Carolyn Nichols of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., (women’s 65+), Dorothy Wasser of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. (women’s 85+), and Jimmy Parker of Santa Fe, New Mexico (men’s 80+) led the American effort in the championships, as they won their singles and doubles titles in their respective age categories. Nichols and Parker both won all-American singles finals: The former beat Susan Wright in straight sets, while Parker came from a set behind to topple Fred Drilling in a match tiebreak for his individual title.

 

A brother and sister also brought home two medals for the red, white and blue, as the all-American pair of Chuck Kuhle and Anne Hayden Frautschi finished as runners-up in the mixed 65+ doubles, while his sister Elizabeth Kuhle won the women’s 70+ doubles title with Una Davis.

Women’s 70+ Doubles: Una Davis & Elizabeth Kuhle (USA) def. Kerry Ballard & Sally Van Rensburg (AUS) 6-3, 6-7(3), [10-7]

Men’s 75+ Doubles: Chris Burr & Tim Griffin (CAN) def. Michael Beautyman (USA) & Bernd Martin (GER) 6-4, 6-2

Women’s 75+ Doubles: Gwenda Ward (USA) & Tuija Hannukainen (FIN) def. Marjory Love & Rosemary J. Wilson (GBR) 6-2, 5-7, [10-7]

Men’s 80+ Singles: Jimmy Parker (USA) def. Fred Drilling (USA) 3-6, 6-0, [10-7]

Men’s 80+ Doubles: Fred Drilling & Jimmy Parker (USA) def. Dean Corley & Jody Rush (USA) 6-3, 6-7(4), [10-7]

Women’s 80+ Doubles: Carolann Castell (USA) & Frances MacLennan (GBR) def. Dorothy Bamber & Margaret Helen French (GBR) 6-0, 6-1

Mixed 80+ Doubles: Andrea Polisky & Dean Corley (USA) def. Carolann Castell & Frederick Drilling (USA) 6-4, 6-1

Women’s 85+ Singles: Dorothy Wasser (USA) def. Viktoria Aselmann (GER) 6-2, 6-2

Women’s 85+ Doubles: Dorothy Wasser & Carol Wood (USA) def. Irmgard Gerlatzka & Elisabeth Van Boemmel (GER) 1-6, 6-4, 10-7

Men’s 90+ Doubles: Herbert Althaus & Werner Marx (GER) def. Chuck Nelson (USA) & Viggo Holm (DEN) 6-3, 6-3
