United States Women’s 50+ team finishes second at Masters World Team Championship
The United States women’s 50+ team finished second at the World Tennis Masters 50 & 55 World Team Championships, which were held on the red clay courts at the Oasi di Pace Club in Rome, Italy. The Maria Esther Bueno Cup (women’s 50 & over) American team improved on their fourth-place finish last year, but lost to Spain, 2-1, in the final.
The tournament is the masters equivalent of the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup competitions, with top American tennis players representing their country in the 50- and 55-and-over age groups. This year’s event had a total of 90 teams from 34 nations across the globe competing in Rome to become world champions.
Americans Amanda Parson-Siegel and Julie Thu tried to bring the Maria Esther Bueno Cup back to the United States, but Spain’s Noelia Perez-Penate and Gisela Riera-Roura ultimately proved to be too strong. Parson-Siegel fell, 3-6, 5-7, while Thu fell, 0-6, 3-6. The doubles match was not played but the American team of Carolina Blouin and Francesca La O were credited with the walkover.
In the women’s 50 individual competition, American Julie Thu, who did not drop a set until the final, finished runner-up to the No. 1 seed Barbara Mulej from Slovakia. In the men’s 55 & over singles championships, Team USA’s Eoin Collins was looking for his third-straight World Individual Title but was knocked out in the semifinals by Spain’s Jordi Mas-Rodriguez, 2-6, 4-6, who became this year’s winner. In the men’s 55 & over doubles category, the United States team of Dana Gill and Kurt Kopp lost, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals to the Dutch team of Marc Duncker and Paul Hearhuis.
