Adult 40 & Over Teams Advance To Nationals

James Maimonis, Manager, Media & Communications | August 28, 2019

WESTBOROUGH, MA- Eight more USTA League teams have advanced to League Nationals by winning USTA New England Sectional Championships. Three Women’s 40 & Over teams punched their tickets to Nationals on Sunday, August 25 while the first five men’s and women’s teams clinched their spots on August 11.

USTA New England held its Adult 40 & Over Sectionals from August 10-11 at three sites in Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, where Men’s 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5+ and Women’s 4.5+ teams all took home titles. Women’s 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 NTRP divisions featured larger fields and needed an additional 40 & Over Playoff from August 25-26 at Woburn Racquet Club and Bass River Tennis Club to determine the Sectional Champions.

This year’s 40 & Over winners are as follows:

4.5+ Women- Lakeville Athletic Club (Lakeville, MA) captained by Mary Carroll

4.5+ Men- Apex Racket and Fitness (Portland, ME) captained by Jim Litrocapes

4.0 Women- Wimbledon 109 (Walpole, MA) captained by Janet Giannetti

4.0 Men- BSC Wellesley (Wellesley, MA) captained by Randal Noller

3.5 Women- Advantage from Middlebury Racquet Club (Middlebury, CT) captained by Trish Rosa

3.5 Men- Cedardale Health and Fitness (Haverhill, MA) captained by Greg Deschenes

3.0 Women- 40-Love from Four Seasons Racquet Club (Wilton, CT) captained by Toni Tuohy

3.0 Men- Tenacity from Grand Slam Tennis Club (Banksville, NY/CT) captained by Unni Nair

This year’s 40 & Over Sectionals event used traditional team scoring, with two singles and three doubles positions per team match. From there, the team with the most individual positions wins the team match.

For the first time in 2019, however, the women’s 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 regular seasons as well as the Playoff, featured four team matches (one singles and three doubles). The total score was calculated first by individual positions won and then sets lost.

All eight advancing teams will compete at USTA Nationals during the second, third and fourth weekends in October. The 40 & Over 4.0 Nationals will be held in Surprise, AZ from October 11-13; the 3.0s will be from October 18-20 in Orlando, FL; the 3.5s will be from October 18-20 in Oklahoma City, OK and the 4.5+ will be from October 25-27 in Orlando.
