Rubin and Holm Named July Captains of the Month
WESTBOROUGH, MA - Congratulations to the July USTA League Captains of the Month, Sam Rubin, of Brookline, MA, and Hilary Holm, of Whitefield, ME!
Sam Rubin started as a Social Tennis League player, where he’s played in Boston area sites for years. It was there he found out about the opportunity to serve as a captain of the 18-39 league out of Eastern Mass. This past winter, Sam led his team, which competed at Sportsmen’s Tennis & Enrichment Center in Dorchester, to a first-place finish.
“When I heard the league was looking for a captain this year, I jumped at the opportunity to put my leadership skills to the test & invoke my energy around tennis,” he said. “There’s something so special about building a team from the ground up, where people can feed from each other’s energies and learn from one another. I enjoy seeing my teammates view the team as a collective “we” and taking the time to connect more outside of the league.”
Sam also captained three Social League teams this year in Brighton (two spring and one summer), one of which finished atop the league standings.
Win or lose, Sam always makes it his mission to have fun when involved in tennis.
“I love that tennis is a very high energy and social sport. I’ve been known to hype up my teams with my boom box, loaded of course with music curated from the team. Shout out to Rihanna & Pitbull for helping us get some Ws. I’ve been fortunate to meet some awesome friends from the tennis leagues.”
Hilary Holm is a successful, detail-oriented USTA League captain from Maine. She currently captains a Women’s 40 & Over team, a Mixed 40 & Over team, a Mixed 18 & Over team and a Women’s Tri-Level team. She plays out of Kennebec Valley Tennis Association at A-Copi Tennis and Sports Center.

- Sam (right) captains both USTA League as well as Social League teams.
Her Mixed 40 & Over team, “On Target,” has reached New England Sectionals each of the past two seasons, while the Mixed 18 & Over squad reached Sectionals this summer and made it to Districts in 2022.
“I started captaining by taking over teams whose captains ‘retired,’” Holm said. “My players are great about being committed to play so I don't have to worry too much about finding last-minute subs. I also enjoy making the teams possible so that all the teammates can enjoy the camaraderie of being on a USTA League team.”
As Captains of the Month, both Sam and Hilary received a a $50 Tennis Warehouse gift card and are eligible to win the grand prize: a trip for two to the BNP Paribas Open 2024 at Indian Wells.
