BEVERLY, MA- For many, Labor Day is the unofficial end to summer, however for New England USTA League players, summer wraps up once the 65 & Overs get their shot at the New England Sectional Championship. Sixteen teams competed in the final Sectionals of the season from September 8-9 at Bass River Tennis Club in Beverly, MA for the chance to represent New England at the 65 & Over Invitational in this winter in Arizona.


The 6.0s and 8.0s will compete from January 25 – 27, while the 7.0s and 9.0s will play from February 1-3. Both events will take place at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex in Surprise, AZ.


Here are the advancing teams:

 

6.0 Women

 

Seniorellas, from Ludlow Tennis Club in Ludlow, MA, took home the 6.0 championship. Marguerite Brennen captained her team to a head-to-head victory against a team from Willy’s Gym in Eastham, MA. ADVERTISEMENT Seniorellas dropped the opening match, 0-3, in the best-of-three series, but fought back to take the next match, 3-0. In the deciding match, the duos of Marsha Olson & Christine Evans (No. 2) and Wendy Bowers & Jane Mellor (No. 3) came up huge, each picking up victories to seal the championship for Seniorellas, 2-1.

 

7.0 Women

 

Carol Cahillane led her team, Super Savvy, through a competitive flight and grueling final to ultimately clinch the 7.0 title. The team representing Bay Road Tennis Club, which plays out of Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, defeated teams from Pond View Racquet Club in Westerly, RI and Tennis Coop in Madbury, NH en route to the finals. There, they were met by a team from Lyme Shores Racquet Club from East Lyme, CT, which finished 2-0 to win the second 7.0 flight. In the single match final, Super Savvy go the better of Lyme shores, winning two individual matches to one. The pairings of Lucy Hartry & Carol Cahillane and Virginia Duryee & Sandra Southwick earned victories in the finals for Bay Road.

 

7.0 Men

 

Jim Bisceglia led his team, Stripers, out of Willy's Gym in Eastham, MA, to a 7.0 Men’s Sectional title. Stripers took down teams from the host club, Bass River, and Tennis Rhode Island, based in Warwick, RI, on their way to victory. Stripers cruised past Tennis RI, 3-0, and defeated Bass River, 2-1, thanks to double wins by the teams of Jim Bisceglia & David Kenney and David Bernstein & Gerald Haigh.

 

8.0 Women

 

The Baseline Boomers, led by Captain Lynda Van Kleeck, took home the 8.0 Women’s top prize. The Baseline Boomers, out of the Edge at South Burlington, defeated a team from Bass River. The championship went to the decisive third match, as the teams split the first two by a 2-1 score. In the clinching match, the No. 1 doubles paring of Allyson Bolduc & Marjorie Gale and the No. 3 pair of Phyllis Marcell & Christine Campbell, earned victories for the Boomers, giving them a 2-1 victory in the match and in the final.

 

8.0 Men

 

Frank Friguglietti led his Men’s 8.0 squad to a New England Sectional Title. The team, out of Ludlow Tennis Club, finished atop of its three-team flight that included teams from the Field Club of Longmeadow, MA and the Edge at South Burlington. The Ludlow team took down Field Club, 3-0 and the Edge, 2-1, to finish with a 5-1 individual match record.
