USTA League National Championships- New England Results

 

October 6-8

 

Adult 18 & Over

Women’s 5.0+ - Jayne Kane led her Women’s 5.0+ team from Chelsea Piers in Stamford, CT to a third-place finish in flight play. The team went 2-2 in the five-team flight at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, FL. Their wins came against teams from Washington state and Florida. Chelsea Piers finished with a position record of 6-6.

 

Men’s 3.5- Stephen Collins’ team from Centre Court Tennis Club in Riverside, RI competed in the Men’s 3.5 division in Surprise, AZ. The team finished fourth in flight play behind teams from New Jersey, Southern California and Louisiana. Centre Court finished 0-3 in match play and 2-13 in position scores.

 

Women’s 3.5- The women’s 3.5 squad hailed from Waltham Athletic Club in Waltham, MA and was led by Saru Wade and Marie Payton. Although the team finished fourth in the flight, the teams were separated by just 20 total games. Waltham went 6-9 in position score, with the other three teams finishing slightly better at 8-7. Waltham picked up its lone match win against a team from Minnesota, 3-2. The team competed in Surprise, AZ.

 

October 13-15

 

Adult 18 & Over

Women’s 4.0- The Middlebury Masters, out of Middlebury Racquet Club in Middlebury, CT, finished in third place in flight play in the Women’s 4.0 division in Surprise, AZ. Barbara Kiselak and Ellen O'Donnell let their squad to a 1-2 record (6-9) with their lone win coming against a team from Buffalo, NY.

 

Men’s 4.0- Gabriel Gordon and Colin Griggs led their Men’s 4.0 team, TMV, to Nationals in Surprise, AZ. Team TMV, which played out of the Racket and Fitness Center in Portland, ME, finished fourth in flight play. The team finished 0-3 and compiled a 3-12 position record throughout the weekend.


Adult 40 & Over

Women’s 3.0- The Women’s 3.0 team out of Centre Court Tennis Club in Riverside, RI, finished in third place their flight in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Captained by Laura Pippitt andJennifer McGann, the team went 1-2 in flight play with a 7-8 position record. They defeated a team from Surprise, AZ, 5-0 for their one victory.

 

Men’s 3.0- The Mature Men of Milford, out of Milford Indoor Tennis in Milford, CT, took home fourth place in their five-team flight in the Men’s 3.0 division. Andrew Taylor and his squad ended their weekend in Fort Lauderdale, FL with a 1-3 record with a 6-14 position score. Their win came against a team from Northern California.

    NE Wins Friendship Cup

    The Friendship Cup has a rich history and successful story of establishing international camaraderie and sisterhood both on and off the court. The tradition started in 1967 when Walter Foeger of Vermont was looking to establish competitive senior tennis play in alliance with the New England Lawn Tennis Association (NELTA), now USTA New England. He contacted George Barta of the Canadian senior division, and together, they created the Friendship Cup. In that year, players competed on three courts at the Jay Peak Resort in Vermont. Read More
