Fourth Weekend Wraps Up at League Nationals
WESTBOROUGH, MA- New England sent five Section Champions to the USTA League Nationals from October 27-29 in Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, FL. Men’s and women’s teams from the Adult 40 & Over and 55 & Over divisions competed for a shot at the National Championship.
The top New England finish of the weekend came from the Men’s 55 & Over 8.0 team from Rally Point Racquet Club in Greenville, RI. John Mannix and Russell Steere’s team finished third in their five-team flight in Orlando going 2-2 with a position record of 5-7. New England picked up wins against teams from Dayton, OH and Honolulu, HI.

Adult 40 & Over
Women’s 3.5- Team Simply Smashing, out of Chelsea Piers in Stamford, CT, was led by captain Emily Catto. The team finished 0-3 (6-14) in their five-team flight in Fort Lauderdale.
Men’s 3.5- Randy Law captained his Chip 'n Charge squad out of Solaris Racquet Club in Stamford CT. The team went 0-3 (5-10) in its four-team flight in Fort Lauderdale.
Adult 55 & Over
Women’s 8.0- Catherine Arkins led her squad from Bass River Tennis Club in Beverly, MA to Orlando for the 55 & Over Nationals. The team finished third in a four-team flight that was separated by one position win from top to bottom. The top two teams finished 2-1 (5-4) while New England and a team from Scottsdale, AZ went 1-2 (4-5) overall. Arkins’ team picked up its lone win against Arizona.
Women’s 6.0- The Women’s 6.0 team also competed at the USTA Nationals Campus in Orlando. Sonja Mason captained her team from Berkshire West Athletic Club to a 1-2 (2-7) record, good for third place in the flight. New England picked up its win against a team from Illinois.
The next League Nationals will take place from November 3-5 in Mobile, AL. New England will send all its Mixed 18 & Over teams ranging from NTRP Ratings 6.0-10.0.

The Friendship Cup has a rich history and successful story of establishing international camaraderie and sisterhood both on and off the court. The tradition started in 1967 when Walter Foeger of Vermont was looking to establish competitive senior tennis play in alliance with the New England Lawn Tennis Association (NELTA), now USTA New England. He contacted George Barta of the Canadian senior division, and together, they created the Friendship Cup. In that year, players competed on three courts at the Jay Peak Resort in Vermont. Read More
