Four Advance from Mixed 40 & Over Sectionals
USTA New England held its second League Sectionals of the summer from July 14-16, the 40 & Overs. Four teams have advanced and will be competing at Nationals this fall. The teams are listed below:
9.0 Champions- MCAC; Campbell
Mid-Cape Athletic Club took home the 9.0 championship by defeating a team from Rally Point. Led by Captain Elizabeth Campbell, Mid Cape won the match, 2-1, and took 12 total sets to Rally Point’s eight.
8.0 Champions- Weymouth; Stansbury
The husband/wife duo of Alicia and Paul Stansbury was victorious in leading their team to the 8.0 crown. The team didn’t drop a position the entire weekend, cruising through its flight going 3-0 (8-1) and earning a spot in the semifinals. There, they swept Bass River (3-0) and took care of Shrewsbury in the finals, 3-0.
7.0 Champions- Weymouth; Innes
In the largest group of the weekend featuring six flights, Weymouth; Innes came out the lone victors. Led by Gary Innes, Weymouth took down Intensity Club and Willows in a three-team championship flight to decide the winner. The team finished 3-0 (7-2) in flight play to reach the championship flight.
6.0 Champions- Waltham; Kraus
Led by Captain Amy Kraus, the team finished 2-0 in its three-team flight compiling a 4-2 position score. Waltham defeated Cedardale Blue and Rally Point to take home the Sectional title.

- Mixed 40 & Over 6.0 Waltham Kraus

Sam Rubin started as a Social Tennis League player, where he’s played in Boston area sites for years. The Friendship Cup has a rich history and successful story of establishing international camaraderie and sisterhood both on and off the court. The tradition started in 1967 when Walter Foeger of Vermont was looking to establish competitive senior tennis play in alliance with the New England Lawn Tennis Association (NELTA), now USTA New England. He contacted George Barta of the Canadian senior division, and together, they created the Friendship Cup. In that year, players competed on three courts at the Jay Peak Resort in Vermont. Read More
