LUDLOW, MA- The Nashua 18U Advanced Junior Team Tennis (JTT) team out of Nashua Swim and Tennis Club in Nashua, NH, will be representing New England at the World TeamTennis (WTT) Junior Nationals in San Diego, CA from July 23-26. Nashua took the top spot in a three-team New England qualifier on June 9 at Ludlow Tennis Club played in WTT format. Teams played two matches (round robin style) in the unique format, which includes playing lets and allowing the option to substitute players during a match, among other rules.

“We were excited to get the invitation this year to WTT Junior Nationals. This is a great opportunity for some of our JTT players to compete in this unique format and represent New England on a national level against others with similar ability,” said Jon Kostek, USTA New England Youth Play Manager.

Nashua finished atop the standings, 12 games ahead of second-place finisher, Guilford Advanced, from Guilford, CT (89-77), while Suozzo Advanced, from New Hampshire, came in third at 41 games won. Nashua went 2-0 (12-4 sets) with a 41-33 win against Guilford and a 48-18 victory over Suozzo.

Nashua was coached by Jurgen Georgs and was comprised of his two sons, Kai and Jens, along with Claire Reynolds, Emily Hill, Linda Kong and Jason Boucher. Boucher, Reynolds and Jens Georgs each went 2-0 in matches while the rest of the team each finished 1-1.

After winning each of their first matches, Nashua sat just four games ahead of Guilford heading into their decisive showdown. Nashua jumped out to an early lead thanks to singles success, but then doubles and No. 2 mixed doubles favored Guilford, where they made up ground and trailed by just two games heading into the final position, No. 1 mixed doubles. Nashua proved too strong and pulled away thanks to the timely performance of Jens Georgs and Claire Reynolds.

“We knew going into the there was a potential of Guilford winning the flight and evening up the total games won for the tournament. Jens and Claire stayed focus and made sure that didn’t happen by closing it out 6-0,” Jurgen Georgs said. “The team was really excited with the win but exhausted. I must say the WTT rules made it very interesting and fun.”

Guilford was coached by Christopher Marra while Zachary Suozzo lead 18U Suozzo.

Nashua will be one of 16 teams competing at Nationals in July.

“Being one of the teams that gets to compete out in San Diego is just awesome. They will have an experience that they will always remember,” Georgs said. “Having a JTT team that comes from New Hampshire I think is well deserved since they have been championing Junior Team Tennis for years through the hard efforts of folks like Debra LaPress and Diane Phelps.”
