February 11: Mitchell Krueger wins RBC Challenger
Mitchell Krueger, a native Texan, defeats Mackenzie McDonald to win the RBC Championships of Dallas, an ATP Challenger Tour event, and Krueger’s first tour title. Growing up in Dallas, Krueger volunteered as a ball kid for this same tournament and is now one of its champions.
March 15: Home of Texas Tennis Announced
USTA Texas announced plans to develop a new headquarters and multi-court, multi-surface tennis facility in Cedar Park as part of the planned Indigo Ridge development. With both civic and commercial partnerships, progress toward building the new home of Texas tennis will continue into the next year.
April 20: US wins Fed Cup tie in San Antonio
The United States won in San Antonio as part of a Fed Cup tie between the US and Switzerland. Headlined by Americans Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens, the event showcased US women’s tennis talent and featured family and kids tennis events as part of the festivities.
May 19: University of Texas Longhorns win 2019 NCAA Title in tennis
The University of Texas at Austin Longhorns men’s tennis team took home the NCAA team tennis national title. The championship team featured two native Texans, Nevin Arimilli and Colin Markes of Austin.
July 14: Savannah Broadus wins Girls Doubles Wimbledon title
Savannah Broadus of Carrollton, along with partner Abigail Forbes, took home the title of 2019 Wimbledon Girls Doubles champions. Multiple Texas juniors played at junior slams including the US Open where Broadus, Leighton Allen, and Kailey Evans competed as well.
September 28: 2019 USTA Texas Tennis Summit features Cliff Drysdale
International Tennis Hall of Fame member Cliff Drysdale headlined the biennial USTA Texas Tennis Summit which took place in Georgetown. The Summit featured a keynote from Drysdale as well as meetings, roundtables and on-court demonstrations from guests across the state and nation.
October & November: Six Texas teams win League National Championships
USTA Texas boasted six National Champions at the USTA League National Championships, held on seven different weekends from October 4 to November 17. With champions across multiple divisions, Texas boasted the largest number of winners from any one section in 2019.
November 10 & 17: Texas hosts JTT Nationals, Texas teams win
Texas hosted the USTA Junior Team Tennis National Championships in San Antonio and multiple home-state teams won championships. Three Texas teams reached the finals at the 14U Championships, taking home the Intermediate national title and finishing runner-up in the Intermediate and Advanced divisions. Teams from the Austin Tennis Academy swept the 18U Championships, capturing both the advanced and intermediate national titles.
