What does receiving this award mean to you?

"My military service as a rescue helicopter pilot was to save lives. Our motto was “that others may live”.  Helping workers find employment gave me a great deal of satisfaction, which then transferred over to sharing my sense of gratification with others in the game of tennis. Helping players compete and enjoy tennis and displaying good sportsmanship has always been my goal.   Receiving this award makes me proud to be a Laredo Tennis Association volunteer.  We make fun of our volunteerism by saying “we work for food,” but more than anything, we strive for fair play and promoting the game of tennis."

Presented at the 2024 Awards Luncheon at the Omni Las Colinas Hotel in Irving on Saturday, Feb. 10th:

Robert Cavazos is a true champion of grassroots tennis. Robert was one of the three founders of Laredo Tennis in 1980. Since then, he has consistently given back, expanding the tennis community of Laredo through advocacy with the city and nearby universities, and making the sport more welcoming and accessible. One of Robert’s signature contributions has been his work developing nationally-recognized programs for stroke survivors and members of the blind and low vision community.

A captain both on and off the court, Robert embodies the spirit of service. His journey, from military service to a lifetime of volunteering, reflects a commitment to community and the sport he loves.
