Raising the Bar: Improvements for 2025 Junior Tournaments

Melissa C. Chambers, USTA Texas Junior Competition Committee Chair

"Tennis is really hard."

I overheard a 6-year-old girl say in what looked to be one of her first lessons.  I immediately thought - just wait!  Her words got me thinking…tennis really can be tough.  Tennis is an individual and complex sport; our junior players have to deal with extreme temperatures, long matches and tournaments, the physical demands of the sport, a wide range of emotions, pressure from family and coaches, and, of course, the desire to win.

Junior competitive tennis is a genuine commitment not just from the players but also from our Texas section families, coaches, staff, and other supporters.  Because of this, the USTA Texas Junior Competition Committee and staff work extremely hard throughout the year.  We are constantly looking to improve tournaments, streamline the process, work with Officials, and provide high-level competitive opportunities while bringing new players to our game.

In 2024, for the first time, we had over 11,000 unique junior players in Texas!  We will continue these gains with our 2025 junior competition committee composed of coaches, tournament directors, program managers, parents, and sports psychology experts. We are committed to bringing the best player experience to our junior players, listening to parents' and coaches' concerns, and making Texas tennis the best in the US.  Throughout the year, please continue to read the quarterly USTA Texas Junior Newsletter to stay updated on everything junior competitive!
