2026 USTA Texas Women's Senior Spirit of Tennis Award
What does receiving this award mean to you?
“This award is truly a huge, unexpected honor that acknowledges my contribution to growing the tennis culture. Receiving this award reminds all of us that it is never too late to learn something new and that the true joys in life begin with moving and making friends. It brings me great joy to be a part of the tennis community. Captaining has given me the opportunity to bring new players into the sport and to give women the opportunity to play on a team -- especially women who played years ago that are looking for a way to become active again. Playing in tournaments has provided the opportunity to meet and become friends with women from around the state and encourage them to continue to register and play. I am thankful for an award that acknowledges and celebrates my role as a player who loves the game, values the friendships, and is committed to supporting a sport we all hope continues to grow.”

About the winner:
In the world of league tennis, a great captain manages a roster, but a legendary captain builds a family. Kathleen McDonnold (72) has spent years proving that the true spirit of the game isn’t found in the power of a serve, but in the strength of the community you cultivate around it.
Kathleen has become a cornerstone of Austin tennis after picking up a racquet again ten years ago, transitioning from a passionate league player to one of the most respected leaders in the Capital Area Tennis Association (CATA). Her dedication was recognized statewide when she was named the “Best League Captain in Texas Tennis” in 2023, a testament to her incredible work in organizing, motivating, and advocating for her players. In addition to captaining and playing on multiple leagues each season, Kathleen currently serves as a vital member of the CATA Leagues Committee, where her institutional knowledge and player-first perspective help shape the competitive experience for thousands of players in Central Texas.
