TEXANS AT 2019 US OPEN
USTA Texas is proud to send three Texas juniors, Malcolm Moore (Dallas), Daniela Padron-Castillo (Dallas) and Eli Susser (Corpus Christi), to Arthur Ashe Kids' Day on August 24 during the 2019 US Open. All three earned a VIP trip to New York City, which includes a suite experience at Arthur Ashe Kids' Day and many more activities throughout the weekend.
Moore and Padron-Castillo were 2 of the 10 winners of the 21st Annual NJTL Essay Contest. The winners, ranging in age from 10 to 18 all participate in National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) chapters nationwide and were selected from more than 2,600 entries submitted this summer.
2019 marks the 50th anniversary of NJTL, a program founded by Arthur Ashe, Charlie Pasarell, and Sheridan Snyder; to mark the occasion, students were asked to write an essay of 350 words or fewer about the following topic: "This year marks the 50th anniversary of NJTL. What specific impact do you hope your chapter can make in your community today that you would want remembered 50 years from now?"
Susser was selected to the inaugural Net Generation Aces Program which will launch at the 2019 US Open. The program identified athletes between the ages of 13 and 17 who are making a positive difference in their local communities through creative and impactful tennis programs. The 17 Net Generation Aces were selected by their respective USTA section for embodying the youth tennis program’s character pillars: respect, responsibility, listening, effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Following the US Open, Net Generation Aces will represent the USTA by showcasing positivity, sportsmanship, and leadership in their local communities, providing continuing feedback, collaborating with fellow Aces on Net Generation projects, and participating in quarterly video webinars.
Beginning next weekend, Texans Savannah Broadus of Carrollton and Zane Khan of San Antonio will take the court to compete in this year's US Open Junior Tennis Championships.
