National Coaches Day: Meet Tuan Tran

Binh Tran | October 06, 2025

For Coaching Appreciation Month, USTA Texas is highlighting the role and influences of coaches from across Texas.

HOUSTON (Oct. 6, 2025) — For Coach Tuan Tran of Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center, the journey to a career in coaching began during one of the most uncertain times in recent memory, the COVID-19 pandemic. What started as a tribute to a friend quickly grew into a passion that now defines his daily life.

Tran, who was inspired by a fellow coach and friend who passed away from colon cancer, said attending his friend’s funeral changed his perspective.

“I saw the influence he had on his students, and that inspired me to pursue a career in coaching,” Tran said. “I also have strong relationships with my own coaches growing up. They’re mentors to me, and we still check in. That’s the type of relationship I value and want to pass on.”

Among the highlights of Tran’s coaching career is his recent experience at one of tennis’s grandest stages.

“Just recently, this past US Open, I was part of the coaching crew for Guy Sasson, who’s ranked No. 3 in the world in wheelchair tennis for the quad division,” Tran said. “That was huge for me. To be a credentialed coach at the US Open, that’s a different level. It’s something I’m incredibly proud of.”

As for advice to aspiring players looking to take their game to the next level, Tran keeps it simple.

“Have fun, something I didn’t always do when I was younger,” he said. “I wish I had enjoyed the process more and not been so hard on myself. I think it would have helped my game in the long run.”

Now, as he continues to build up the next generation of tennis players in H-Town, Tran remains grounded by the lessons of the past and the relationships that inspire him every day.
