2022 ATA NJTL Eastern Cup

May 17, 2022

In partnership with the American Tennis Association (ATA), USTA Eastern held the inaugural ATA NJTL Eastern Cup on May 14 at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. The event brought together kids ages 12-14 from National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) organizations across the section to engage in some friendly team competition, and also to learn a little bit more about the academy itself.

After competing in some tennis-themed activities—including a relay race while balancing a ball on a racquet—those in attendance enjoyed a tour of the campus, and military pilot Rumeal Lewis spoke to the students about his experiences in the sport. Growing up, Lewis actually refined his tennis skills with the 15-LOVE NJTL—one of the organizations in attendance at the Cup. He played varsity tennis for four straight years in high school and would later go on to graduate from the academy at West Point in 2012. Today, as an aviation officer with the U.S. army, he has traveled all over the world, completing a one-year tour in South Korea in 2017 and conducting operations in Germany, Poland, England and Belgium.

Participating NJTLs included the Newburgh Junior Tennis & Learning Champions, based in Newburgh, N.Y.; the 15-LOVE NJTL, based in Albany, N.Y.; the Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program (HJTEP), based in Harlem, N.Y.; the New York Junior Tennis & Learning (NYJTL), based in New York, N.Y.; and the Kings County Tennis League (KCTL), based in Brooklyn, N.Y., with the team from the New York Junior Tennis & Learning (NYJTL) lifting the hardware at the end of the day.
