Standout junior competitor Sydney Fuger heading to US Naval Academy
Sydney Fuger, a talented junior player from USTA Heart of America, is making waves in the tennis world with her recent commitment to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. From an early age Fuger has shown a passion for the sport, and her dedication has paid off as she prepares to join the academy's prestigious tennis team.
Fuger’s decision to attend the U.S. Naval Academy was influenced by her admiration for the team, coaches, education, and rigorous physical and academic environment the academy offers. She is excited about the discipline and constant physical activity that are integral parts of life at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Fuger’s tennis journey is marked by memorable moments and significant achievements. One of her favorite memories is from the USTA Missouri Valley Rally in the Valley Championships—formally named Sweet 16—where she took a fun photo with her doubles partner, USTA Heart of America’s Mithila Dixit, using a prop that resembled an Instagram post that both players still use today. Dixit has verbally committed to attend the United States Air Force Academy.
This memory highlights the camaraderie and fun that comes along with competing in such tournaments. In terms of accomplishments, Fuger takes pride in reaching the Round of 16 at the USTA Hard Court Nationals in the 16 & Under category, as she defeated the No. 1-ranked player in the country at that event. However, she considers her acceptance into the U.S. Naval Academy as her most significant achievement to date.
The recently completed Rally in the Valley Championships is one of Fuger’s favorite events, and there are several reasons why the tournament stands out to her. She enjoys the compass-draw format, fun atmosphere—including games like cornhole and Connect 4—and tournament organization.
“I like the 16-draw format,” Fuger said. “It makes it more competitive and draws more attention to it. The compass format gives players four matches, and I think that is important because people pull a lot of strings to get here.”

Fuger placed second in the Girls’ 18 & Under singles division and partnered with Dixit to finish second in Girls’ 18s doubles at the Rally in the Valley Championships held June 13-16 in Edmond, Okla. Fuger also was recognized for her standout sportsmanship at the tournament. For a full recap of the Rally in the Valley Championships, click here.
Looking ahead, Fuger has ambitious plans. She is contemplating majoring in aerospace engineering, cybersecurity or political science. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy she will then serve for five years, with a preference to be stationed in San Diego due to her love for California.
Fuger suggested up-and-coming junior tennis players should participate in tournaments, emphasizing that playing matches is crucial for improvement while offering the opportunity to make friends from around the country. With her impressive track record and determined mindset, Fuger is undoubtedly a name to watch in the world of tennis and beyond.
