Westfield Tennis Club Gets New Name
Starting this month, Westfield Tennis Club in Cedar Rapids is now Smithfield Tennis and Pickleball Center. Last year, Duane and Laura Smith purchased the tennis facility and have been making much-needed improvements ever since.
“We are planning on having multiple grand opening events for both tennis and pickleball, but we don’t have a concrete date set yet,” said Rusty Graff, General Manager. “Adding completely dedicated indoor pickleball courts will be a first for eastern Iowa and for Linn and Johnson counties. Given the limited number of quality indoor Pickleball and Tennis courts, we feel it will be a major added benefit for the eastern half of the state.”
The $1-million dollar project includes renovation of the existing 41,400-square-foot building, including six indoor pickleball courts and four indoor tennis courts, and will create eight new jobs. USTA Iowa also has selected this facility as their 2022 Facility of the Year.
Graff said as a tennis professional, he was hesitant to try pickleball, but said the two sports can complement each other and is looking forward to being part of a club which offers both sports.
“Tennis can learn some things from pickleball, just as pickleball will be able to incorporate some tennis elements,” he added. “It’s my expectation that the two will merge to form a larger and more enjoyable social community.”
Graff hopes the new facility will be the premiere location for tennis and pickleball in Eastern Iowa. For more on the renovation, click on the website at https://www.smithfieldtpc.com/
