2022 Nebraska Boys High School State Tournament Results

Andrea Gallagher | October 24, 2022

It was a cold couple of days for the Boys State High School State Tournament, but it didn’t cause Lincoln East High School to drop a single match at the Class A State Tournament, or all season long! The undefeated Spartans were able to clinch the title again, but this time winning every category at the Koch Tennis Center in Omaha.

At #1 singles, East freshman Hunter Nelson beat Kearney junior Asher Saulsbury in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. At #2 singles, East freshman Samarth Sajeesh beat Lincoln Southwest’s Barrett Warner, 6-2, 6-1. Meanwhile the East #1 doubles team of sophomore Caden Haar and senior Kirby Le, beat Lincoln Southeast’s junior Nahum Barber and sophomore Ruyter Jamison, 6-3, 6-1. Last but not least,  #2 doubles, sophomore Joseph Bucknell and freshman Kayden Le beat Lincoln Southwest seniors Chase Benson and Cooper Malone, 7-5, 6-2.

“Winning back to back titles was an incredible feeling,” said Spartan head coach Chris Stock. “The guys, despite being so young, and mostly new to the State Tennis environment, really handled it superbly by just playing tennis and relying on their serves and returns to set the tone for each point. I couldn’t be happier for a team. What an accomplishment!”

Followed by Lincoln East’s team score of 60, Kearney came in second place at 37.125, Lincoln Southwest third at 37 and Lincoln Southeast rounded out the fourth spot at 33.5.

Meanwhile, over at the Class B State Tournament at the Woods Park Tennis Center in Lincoln, McCook High School came out as the team winner and also claimed the #1 and #2 doubles titles as well. At #1 doubles, McCook senior Evan Humphrey and junior Lincoln Michaelis never dropped a set as they beat Mount Michael seniors Jack Flott and Samuel Kleinschmit 6-3, 6-1.

“You can do anything you put your mind to, and we played our best tennis at the right time with the correct mindset,” Humphrey said.

“Winning the team title, and the #1 doubles title, felt great,” added Michaelis. “Bringing home McCook's first Boys Tennis State Team Title was a dream that the whole team shared and strived to accomplish.”

Out on the singles courts, Crete junior Aidan McDowell claimed the #1 singles title, beating McCook’s Nathaniel Miller, 6-2, 6-2. Over at the #2 spot, South Sioux City junior Christian Perez had a 3-set nail biter against Elkhorn North junior Ryan Mensch. Perez came out ahead 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

McCook head coach Matt Wiemers said the team worked hard in the off-season and put in the time needed to do what they had to do this season, and it all paid off.

“We tweaked our season schedule so that we would be battle-tested and prepared ourselves for the run at a state title,” Wiemers said. “That proved to be a huge asset, as the team peaked at the most opportune time to come together and leave it all on the courts at state.  It was very gratifying to see our kids play at a high level at state and encounter the success they had.”

McCook’s overall team score was 50, with Elkhorn North coming in second at 35.75, Grand Island Central Catholic coming in at third with 31.5, and Crete rounding out at fourth with a score of 30.125.
