A Trip to Indian Wells
Since the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells was on pause the last couple years because of COVID, I finally went back this year. It was my fifth time, and as usual it never disappoints. However, it wasn’t easy getting there. First: a canceled flight from Denver to Palm Springs. Second: A redirected flight to Phoenix, but we never made the connection to Palm Springs. Third: I was re-booked for a new flight, but not until 24 hours later. I can’t miss Opening Day! After making a new friend on the canceled flight, we decided to drive from Phoenix to Palm Springs. She was working at the tournament and also wanted to get there, instead of waiting at an airport. Five hours later and around midnight, we finally arrived in Tennis Paradise!
I had no luggage, since it was still somewhere in Denver, and I was still wearing what I had on the plane. The good news? I had a backpack with my tennis shoes and racquet. The next morning, I got up and went to the place I always go during my trips to this tournament; the Charlie Moore Tennis Academy which is next door to my hotel in Cathedral City. During the tourney, Moore holds daily drill clinics for two weeks. Every year I meet different tennis enthusiasts from all over the world, and we bond over our love of tennis. One nice guy from Chicago let me borrow his shirt, and after buying some socks from the golf shop, I was ready to go. After 90 minutes of forehands, backhands, volleys and drills in the sun, I was ready to head to the tournament and watch the pros in action.
Over the next few days I was able to watch some amazing players including Americans Alison Riske, Christina McHale, Christopher Eubanks, Dennis Kudla and Taylor Fritz (who ended up winning the men’s final against Rafa Nadal.) I also saw Matteo Berrettini, Gael Monfils, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Paula Badosa, Caroline Garcia, Ajla Tomljanovic and Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, who had the Ukrainian flag draped over her seat, as well as in her coach’s section.
The third day while watching Swiss player Holger Rune take on American Stefan Kozlov in Stadium 3, I got a text from area code 402 that read “Hi from the first row across the court!” Sure enough, I look across the court and see Lincoln tennis pro Talor Wain and his wife Caitlin smirking and waving. The tennis world is both small and large at the same time. The Strawhecker family from Kearney worked in the Fila tent during the tournament, and even met actor Ben Stiller there.
“The beautiful surroundings and the nice people at Indian Wells are hard to beat,” said Ty Strawhecker. “My men’s captain from Omaha and his wife were also at the resort and he joined us, allowing us to play doubles.”
Each time I attend this tournament, I have a new and unique experience. The first year I was able to watch legends like Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova and the Williams sisters. Those players were notably absent this year due to injuries and retirement. In subsequent years I was able to watch Lincoln native Jack Sock and even got a selfie with him and other players. My kids would get all the players' autographs on a giant tennis ball, and they were almost always very accommodating.
There were noticeable changes this year including a mandatory app with your uploaded vaccine information, digital tickets, clear bag policy and a cashless venue. It’s probably my favorite tennis destination, and I encourage any tennis lover to attend at least once in their lifetime. Next year’s schedule is March 6-19, 2023 - hope to see you there!
