Christensen and Bigando Honored with Awards
Atsuko Christensen and Deb Bigando of Omaha were recently recognized with awards by USTA Nebraska. Bigando received the Sportsmanship Award and Christensen received the Outstanding Volunteer award. Christensen is humbled by the recognition, and volunteers whenever she can. Most recently, she helped at the 18 & Over Mixed Sectional Tournament at the Koch Family Tennis Center.
“She assisted with set up, worked as a court monitor, tournament desk as well as helped serve at the cookout, her assistance was greatly appreciated!” said Kay Merkel, USTA League Coordinator.
“Kay is a good friend and I liked to help out and I also got to watch some great tennis,” Christensen said.
Christensen has been playing USTA Leagues for about 20 years and loves the social and competitive aspects of the game. In addition to tennis, she also runs, golfs and keeps active any way she can. She’s also able to spend time on the court with her husband, who plays USTA Leagues as well.
Her 40 & Over 4.5 Women’s team recently got back from USTA League Nationals in Scottsdale, Arizona. Though the team didn’t come out on top, she still had fun playing in warm weather and watching all the other Nebraska teams play.
Deb Bigando didn’t start playing the sport until she was in her mid-50’s. She first became interested when her kids played in high school. Now she considers her time on the court her “counseling appointments” and looks forward to each match. She said being nominated for a sportsmanship award is very satisfying.
“Tennis is a game that requires honesty and integrity, while there are players with a reputation regarding bad calls, I want to assume that the vast majority of players are doing their best to be fair and accurate in their line calls,” she said.
Christensen and Bigando will receive some USTA swag for these awards. If you know someone who is deserving, email us at communications@movalley.usta.com.
