Ernest Grundy Tennis Center Set to Open in March

The new Ernest Grundy Tennis Center in Kearney is expected to open on March 24. The facility will be unveiled under the supervision of new Tennis Director Matt Morrow. The 62,500 square foot facility includes six indoor tennis courts, a mezzanine spectator area, restrooms, mother’s room, lobby, conference room, lockers and City of Kearney Park and Recreation offices.

“Kearney is a tennis community, so I’m most excited that players will have a quality place to play indoors,” said Scott Hayden, Kearney Park and Rec Director. “Additionally, we feel that more people are looking for individual sports to play and tennis is certainly a great one.  We are also excited about expanding our tennis programming through the City of Kearney Park and Recreation Department, Kearney Tennis Association, and the University of Nebraska at Kearney.”

The $9 million tennis facility got its namesake from Ernest Grundy, who was a longtime English professor at the college and was also active in developing youth tennis programs.

The new tennis center is located in University Village, which is part of the University of Nebraska at Kearney, but will be operated by the City of Kearney. The UNK women’s tennis team will also call it home. It came together with help from the community and donations.

“The facility came to be through one large financial gift, a Civic Center Financing Grant, several other generous donations, grants, City of Kearney, the University of Nebraska-Kearney, Kearney Tennis Association, and local community support,” Hayden added.

The Ernest Grundy Tennis Center will serve as the host site of the 2023 and 2024 ITA Division II Women’s National Team Indoor Championships.
