Lincoln’s Stacy Pickering Receives Sportsmanship Award

Andrea Gallagher | July 14, 2022

While she’s only been playing tennis for five years, Stacy Pickering of Lincoln has immersed herself into the sport. She plays whenever she gets the chance at Woods Tennis Center and Genesis Health Club, whether it’s doubles, singles, drill clinics, cardio tennis and more.

“I started around five years ago when my friend wanted to try something new, so we took the Adult Beginner class at Woods Tennis Center,” she recalls. “I was so nervous! I had no idea that it would spark my obsession with tennis. At that point I didn't even know how the scoring worked and had never touched a racquet before.”

She’s come a long way, playing in numerous adult USTA leagues. Recently, she was nominated for the USTA Sportsmanship award, as a competing team noticed her spirit on the court during a doubles match. She is very humbled by receiving this nomination.

“I have so much fun on the court and yes I want to win, but I also want everyone else to be having as much of a good time as I am,” she said. “There are so many things we can't control while playing tennis, but our attitude and how we interact with others is something in our direct control.”

Stacy is currently a 3.0 rated player and she hopes to move up to 3.5 by the end of the year. She also wants to continue to introduce others to the sport, since it’s never too late to learn, she said.

“I love tennis because it is a perfect mix of competition, exercise, and social opportunities. I had no idea when I first started how impactful the people I would meet at tennis would be in my life.”

The 40-year old Texas native and her husband have two children and a goldendoodle. When she’s not on the tennis court, she is a Regional Manager of Customer Success for Quest Software. Her husband is a professor of photography at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
