Lisa Hart Aims to Inspire Women Through Coaching

Andrea Gallagher | March 03, 2022

Life has come full circle for Lisa Hart, as the Washington native recently came back to Nebraska. The first time she played for the Husker women’s tennis team was from 1994-1998, and now she’s back as the Associate Head Coach under Scott Jacboson. She came back to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2021 after spending 18 seasons as the head coach at Washington State.

“I had such an amazing experience on and off the court at the University of Nebraska as a student-athlete,” she said. “It is very exciting to be coaching where I played. Many people who had such a positive influence over my experience (and life) are still working in the athletic department. It is very special to see them and work with them every day.”

Before coaching at Washington State, she also was the head coach at Virginia Tech. She loves coaching and mentoring players, especially at the collegiate level. While in the Pac-12 conference she was able to compete against some of the best tennis programs and coaches in the country. However, she’s well aware of the disparity between male and female coaches.

“In my opinion, there aren’t enough females coaching in any sport,” she said. “Coaching is a very demanding profession especially when trying to balance a family life. I believe a lot of female coaches have a hard time balancing the two things. In order to keep more females in coaching, we need to address how to help female coaches with balancing it all.”

Hart is also doing her own balancing act as she’s raising two children of her own. She enjoys watching them compete in sports, as well as watching college football when she’s not working. As for her future goals? She hopes to continue down the path she’s headed.

“My primary goal is to be the best I can be every day in whatever I am doing. I would love to finish my coaching career at the University of Nebraska.  Our athletic department is simply a class act, committed to the overall student-athlete experience and to winning on the court which meshes perfectly with my core values.”

When she played for the Huskers, Hart was the 1995 Big Eight Freshman of the Year, claimed 74 career singles victories, and won the Big 12 Conference No. 2 singles title as a senior in 1998. She was also a three-time academic all-conference selection, earning first-team academic All-Big 12 honors as a senior.
