Matt Morrow Hopes to Engage Community Through Tennis
The official opening date for the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center ribbon cutting in Kearney is Thursday, June 2, at 5 p.m. Now with a new tennis director, Matt Morrow is excited to be in the new facility and to grow the game of tennis in Kearney and surrounding areas.
“The real goal is to engage the public, and increase the already amazing enthusiasm for tennis in town,” Morrow said. “Our goal is to have recreational play, high school, college, and programming all be an integral part in the success of the EGTC. Kearney has not really had access to quality indoor tennis courts before, so access to year-round play will be a huge boon to the community at large.”
Originally from Texas, Morrow played for both Southwestern University and Midwestern State University colleges. Since then, he’s taught in Texas, Nebraska and South Dakota. He is excited to be back in the cornhusker state and working at a new facility with collaboration between the city of Kearney, the University of Nebraska at Kearney and the Kearney Tennis Association.
“This kind of collaboration is near unheard of in the tennis community, and it really gels with my philosophy of getting people playing tennis and my approach to what needs to be done for tennis in general,” he said. “There is such an itch for tennis in Kearney that it’s surprising something like this hasn’t shown up sooner.”
Morrow reiterated that the facility is open to the public and very affordable at $6 per hour per person, and with an annual pass that fee drops down to $3 per hour. There will be cardio tennis classes, junior and adult classes and private lessons.
“We will also have fun events and activities throughout the year for the public to enjoy! People will also be able to watch UNK duels, high school matches, and tournaments using our fantastic viewing from the mezzanine. There was a serious attempt at making this facility as modern and capable as possible out of the gate, so we are ahead of the game for years to come.”
The Ernest Grundy Tennis Center will also host the NCAA Women’s Division II Tournament next Feb. 24-26 in 2023 and Feb. 23-25 in 2024. It will also play host to the tennis portion of the Nebraska Senior Games August 5-7, 2022.
