Nebraska Natives at US Open
A number of Nebraska natives competed in the 2022 U.S. Open including Jack Sock, Jackson Withrow and Lily Lautenschlager. Lincoln native Jack Sock was breezing through the first round of men’s signals against Argentinian Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 7-5, until he had some back issues and had to call out a trainer in the third set. By the fourth set, he had to retire after losing the first game. However, he and doubles partner, Canadian Leylah Fernandez, were able to make it to the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles section, losing 7-5, 7-6, to Storm Sanders and John Peers of Australia.
Omaha native Jackson Withrow made it to the second round of men’s doubles with partner Nathaniel Lammons, losing in a tie-breaker to Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski. In mixed doubles, he and partner Bernarda Pera made it to the second round, where they also lost to Sanders and Peers of Australia, where that team went on to win the mixed section.
Lincoln teenager Lily Lautenschlager competed in the girls’ wheelchair singles and doubles sections for the first time at the U.S Open. After losing in the quarter-finals in singles, she and partner Ruby Bishop of the U.K. advanced to finals, losing 0-6, 0-6 to Jade Moreira Lanai of Brazil and American Maylee Phelps. Lautenschlager is currently a freshman at the University of Arizona.
“My experience at the 2022 US Open was amazing!” she said. “It was super cool to be on the campus, surrounded by tennis history, fans, and legends!”
Lautenschlager is currently a freshman at the University of Arizona, where she competes in wheelchair tennis and basketball.
“My goals moving forward are to continue growing my skills at the University of Arizona and eventually making it to the Paralympics.”
