Platteview Girls Tennis Team Looking Forward to Inaugural Season

Andrea Gallagher | March 31, 2023

Nebraska Girls High School Tennis season is now in full swing with a new team on the schedule. Platteview High School just started its own girls tennis team after co-oping with Bellevue East for the past few years. A total of 11 players will round out varsity and junior varsity teams for the Trojans.

“I'm just excited about bringing the great game of tennis to our community and hoping that people find a love for this life long sport,” said Josh Siske, Platteview Athletic Director. “We are hopeful that it will take off and that we will have enough interest to give us a reason to build courts on campus.”

Alex Nielsen, who teaches at the high school, is coaching the team and said he is looking forward to the inaugural year. All but two of the players are playing tennis for the first time, but he said they are picking it up fast

“The team is very athletic and tennis has come naturally to them,” he said. “We are still inexperienced but are improving every day. At our season opener, everyone who competed won at least one match. For many of the girls, this was their first-ever real match.”

Platteview will compete against Class B teams, with a fair amount of Class A teams in the schedule as well, Nielsen said. The team came up with a list of four goals for the season: Increase the skill levels for all players; each player wins one match; win a duel; and have everyone return to the team next season.

“We have only one senior this year, so next year we will be returning nearly the entire team,” Nielsen said. “A good portion of the team is sophomores so I think we will be pretty competitive in the years to come.”

The team is currently using tennis courts in the Hawaiian Village housing development which were recently resurfaced.
