Play Tennis Lincoln Day a success at Woods
Despite the rain, more than 40 people showed up for Play Tennis Lincoln Day within USTA Nebraska. The festivities took place at Woods Tennis Center on May 19. Once the rain started, the event was moved inside. Kids and adults partook in a number of drills, as the free event was geared toward players who are new to tennis.
“I feel like I could take what I learned today and go out there and play tennis,” said Jerome Creasy, one of the participants.
“I came out today because I enjoy watching my friends playing in leagues here at Woods, and I wanted to learn the basics,” said Ericka Flanders.
This is the second straight year the event was put on by the Lincoln Tennis Association. Local tennis teaching professionals donated their time to teach the game of tennis. Participants received free racquets, T-shirts and sandwiches from Runza.
“The purpose of Play Tennis Lincoln is to get tennis racquets in the hands of tennis players who are new to tennis or players coming out of a hiatus,” said Shalla Powell-Mandigo, Lincoln Tennis Association president. “And teach them some of the basics of the game by local, professional tennis instructors. Our goal is to grow the sport of tennis, and Play Tennis Lincoln is one way the Lincoln Tennis Association helps achieve that goal.”
