Woods Tennis Center Awarded National Wheelchair Grant

Andrea Gallagher | March 22, 2022

Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln is one of many facilities to receive a USTA grant to help offset costs. The most recent grant is for $2,000 and will go toward adult and junior programs, court time and the Annual Capital City Wheelchair Classic tennis tournament, which is held at Woods in the summer.

“Many families of juniors with a physical disability have challenges with medical expenses, equipment and just the day to day obstacles that the rest of us able bodied folks don’t even think about, “said Kevin Heim, Executive Director. at Woods.

Heim said they have around 8-9 regular adults who practice weekly and take part in tournaments throughout the country. There are also entry-level adults who play competitively, as well as junior programing in the summertime.

“Grants like this help to bring people off the couch and to live healthy lives,” Heim added “Once engaged in our programming we often see folks foster new relationships, learn more about the possibilities and opportunities they never thought existed and thus become a positive contributor to our bigger community.”

Thirty-two wheelchair tennis programs in 19 states were awarded more than $50,000 to support the work they're doing in their communities with this latest round of USTA Wheelchair Tennis Grassroots Grants.
