Junior Team Tennis Night Smash packs the courts at University of Tulsa

Blair Schluter | June 04, 2026

The energy was high and the courts were buzzing at the Junior Team Tennis Night Smash, where 32 young players came together for an evening of competition, camaraderie and fun.

The May 29 event from 7 to 9 p.m. at the University of Tulsa featured exciting matches and memorable moments off the court, as the evening showcased the spirit of Junior Team Tennis and the bright future of the game.

We caught up with Casey McKenzie, manager of Junior Team Tennis with USTA Missouri Valley, to recap the highlights, celebrate the participants and reflect on what made this year’s Night Smash such a success.

What went into organizing an event like this from start to finish?

A lot of planning went into making JTT Night Smash successful, but the goal was always simple: create a fun, team-focused experience that would keep players engaged while also creating a true team competition that could happen in just a few hours.

Since this was a new concept, we wanted to create something high-energy, organized and fun. Our bigger goal is to provide more team events like this across the section to grow Junior Team Tennis. We believe there is a real need for consistent, reliable local leagues that provide a more relaxed, team-based competitive outlet outside of traditional tournaments.

How did the University of Tulsa partnership help make the event possible?

The University of Tulsa partnership was huge. Having access to quality courts and the ability to play under the lights created a really special environment for the players. TU provided an incredible venue that elevated the entire experience and made it feel exciting and memorable. We are very thankful for their support in helping junior tennis thrive in our community.

How would you describe the atmosphere under the lights with players competing as teams?

The atmosphere was electric but relaxed at the same time. There was music, energy, teammates cheering each other on and nonstop match play happening across the courts. Because it was team tennis, the environment felt social and supportive. Players were competing hard but also genuinely enjoying being out there with friends.

What kind of feedback did you receive from players, parents and coaches?

The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Parents and coaches kept telling us how much the players loved the format and how refreshing it was to see junior tennis in a fun, team-oriented environment. Players enjoyed the fast-paced rotations, nonstop action and the chance to compete with friends in a more relaxed setting.

We repeatedly heard that there is a need for more opportunities like this with competitive match play without the pressure of a traditional tournament. One of the biggest takeaways was hearing so many people ask, “When is the next one?”

Do you see Night Smash becoming a regular part of the Oklahoma junior tennis calendar?

Absolutely; that is definitely the hope. The response showed there is a real appetite for more team-based, social junior tennis events. With the event reaching full capacity at 32 players and such strong feedback from families and coaches, we would love to continue building on this event and making it a regular opportunity for junior players in Oklahoma and across the section.

How can players and families stay informed about future JTT opportunities?

USTA Oklahoma does a great job sharing updates through their social media and newsletter, and USTA Missouri Valley social media is another great place to follow for upcoming events across the section.

And don’t forget to sign up for the USTA Missouri Valley Junior Team Tennis Open on July 14-15 in Topeka, Kan. Open to the entire section, it will be another super fun team event and a great opportunity for players to compete with friends.
