Staying Active During National Physical Fitness and Sports Month
May is designated National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. The President’s Council on Fitness established the month in 1983 in order to promote healthy lifestyles among all Americans and improve quality of life.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems even more important in 2020 to recognize National Physical Fitness and Sports Month as we begin to emerge from our homes.
Even though many sanctioned tennis events during National Physical Fitness and Sports Month were cancelled, many of us found other ways to get out and get moving!
According to Laurel Noel, Director of Chesterfield Athletic Club, it is paramount to keep our bodies engaged in movement – especially during times of stress. It is obviously important for our physical health – but it is just as important for our mental health.
“It is of course a scientific fact that when you exercise, chemicals called endorphins release and interact with the receptors in your brain that increase a good feeling or reduce the perception of pain,” Noel said. “Exercise also stimulates the release of dopamine and serotonin. It is similar to what is referred to as a ‘runner’s high.’ But any type of physical activity can bring that great feeling on.”
Many USTA St. Louis league players found pleasure in simply taking a walk with their families. Others have taken to planting flowers or vegetables in the garden.
Some are taking it even further.
“I’m going out and running intervals three times a week. Too bad fourth grade math doesn’t make my muscles stronger,” said Sarah Rigby.
When gyms and tennis clubs closed their doors, some purchased fitness equipment to stay in shape.
Noel said how we squeeze the time in matters little, just as long as we do it.
“Even to get out for a few minutes to walk or ride your bike, it is essential now. Also walking in nature, seeing something green increases our sense of peacefulness and relaxation.”
