Team USA wins 2017 Junior Fed Cup Title

E.J. Crawford | September 24, 2017

The U.S. girls continued their strong 2017 Sunday in Budapest, Hungary, defeating Japan, 2-0, to win their fourth Junior Fed Cup title and their third in the last six years.

The victory completed an undefeated run for Team USA, which went 3-0 in round-robin play and defeated Canada, 2-1, in the semifinals. Overall, the American team of Amanda Anisimova, Caty McNally and Whitney Osuigwe (pictured) went 12-2 in individual matches during the competition, with Osuigwe posting a perfect 8-0 mark (5-0 in singles, 3-0 in doubles).

On Sunday, the 15-year-old McNally defeated Naho Sato, 6-3, 6-2, to kick off play, and Osuigwe, also 15, clinched the title for the top-seeded Americans with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Yuki Naito. Japan was seeded No. 2 in the international girls’ competition, the 16-and-under equivalent of Fed Cup.

The U.S. girls also won the Junior Fed Cup in 2008, 2012 and 2014.

The Junior Fed Cup title comes on the heels of some unprecedented junior Grand Slam success: Osuigwe held off Claire Liu to win the first all-American French Open girls’ singles final since 1980; Liu topped Ann Li in the first all-American Wimbledon girls’ singles final since 1979; and Anisimova defeated Coco Gauff at the 2017 US Open Junior Championships in the first all-American US Open girls’ singles final since 1992.

Also Sunday, the U.S. boys fell just shy of making it a clean sweep in Budapest for Team USA, falling in the final to the Czech Republic, 2-0. The U.S. boys were looking to add a fourth Junior Davis Cup title to the ones they captured in 1999, 2008 and 2014.

The third-seeded American boys’ squad of William Grant, Govind Nanda and Tyler Zink, all 16, won their round-robin group with a 2-1 record – they advanced from a three-way tie with Australia and Hungary by posting the best record in individual matches, at 7-2 – before defeating Argentina, 2-1, in the semifinals.

In all, 16 teams advanced to the Junior Davis Cup Finals and 16 to the Junior Fed Cup Finals, all of which came out of regional qualifying events held earlier this year.
