U.S. women win Young Cup at the ITF Masters World Team Championships

March 28, 2025

The women’s team representing the United States at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Masters World Team Championships brought home the title in the Young Cup (W40) after winning a hard-fought battle with the team from Germany.

USA’s Anda Perianu (Ithaca, N.Y.) went the distance with Germany’s Ria Doernemann, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3, to give the Americans the early advantage. Next, Mariko Fritz-Krockow’s 6-4, 7-5 (Corte Madera, Calif.) victory over German Katharina Rath clinched the Young Cup for the U.S. The doubles match, which would have been played by Yulia Bolotova and Kaysie Smashey, was not played as the Americans had already won the tie, 2-0.

The Young Cup hardware was not enough for Fritz-Krockow, as she also played in the ITF singles and doubles championship events. She won the individual women’s 40 title without losing a set in her four matches, and lifted the trophy after a 6-4, 7-5 victory in the final.

Fritz-Krockow teamed up with Australia’s Angela Lawrence-Hendry in the doubles event. They didn’t drop a set en route to the final, when they met the No. 1 seeded team of Silvia Chuda (Slovakia) and Manon Kruse (Germany). The teams split the first two sets of the back-and-forth battle, but Fritz-Krockow and Lawrence-Henry fell in the 10-point tiebreak, 6-4, 4-6 [14-12].

The tournament is the Masters equivalent of the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup competitions, with top American tennis players representing their country in the 30-, 35-, 40- and 45-and-over age groups.
