CHARLES “WHITEY” JOSLIN JR. WINS USTA NEW ENGLAND’S GARDNER WARD CHASE MEMORIAL AWARD FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT

LOUDON, NH - Charles “Whitey” Joslin Jr., longtime coach, player and beloved past owner of Mountainside Racquet & Fitness Center in New London, NH, has been selected as the winner of the 2024 Gardner Ward Chase Memorial Award for lifetime achievement.

Joslin, of Loudon, NH, will be celebrated at the New England Tennis Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on June 9 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI.

Joslin is a member of the New England Hall of Fame Class of 2007.

“I am proud to be recognized for my lifetime achievement in tennis. I loved working with the kids most. It was their enthusiasm that made what I did a lot of fun,” Joslin said.

Joslin began his more than 50-year coaching career following a 10-year active stint as a pilot in the Air Force. He started in Concord, NH and made a number of stops in Massachusetts and New Hampshire along the way, including at: His father’s Turnpike Racket Club in Plainville, MA, Hyannisport Tennis Club, The Racquet Club of Concord, Great Bay Racket Club, King Ridge Tennis Club and The Lake Sunapee Yacht Club.

During that time, Joslin became a certified USPTA professional, coached two high school teams and expanded his home racquet stringing business. He worked as the head professional at multiple facilities, ran national tournaments and served on committees, but his real impact was made in the time he spent with his students.

Joslin was more than a coach. He was someone who cared deeply about people beyond the court.

Whitey his daughter, Laura Joslin-King, were ranked No. 1 in National Father/Daughter for six years.

“Whitey was the man who set my foundation and turned my dreams into goals and then helped my goals become a reality. Not only has he been a mentor, but he has been and will always be family,” said Paul Annacone, Grand Slam Doubles Champion and longtime coach of Pete Sampras. “Whitey has been instrumental in teaching me how to hone the tennis skills to live a life most people only dream of. I can never thank him enough and this honor is so well deserved. Congratulations and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Whitey is a member of the USTA New England Hall of Fame Class of 2007.

Joslin earned many awards for his coaching, including the William Freedman Award for outstanding contribution to New England tennis, the Joseph Dietz Bowl, as the USPTA New England pro who did the most for New England tennis, and the USTA New England Family of the Year award.

Joslin’s industry connections eventually led him to his final stop, Mountainside Racquet & Fitness Center. He would manage the facility for years before ultimately purchasing and operating it with his daughter Laura and son-in-Law, Richard, for 26 years.

As a player, Whitey also saw success. He teamed up with his father to compete in the father/son circuit, reaching as high as No. 15 in the nation. Years later, he kept the tradition alive, winning 19 National Balls, including three 3 Gold Balls, and was ranked the No. 1 duo in the country for six years with his daughter Laura Joslin-King. He and Laura also earned the Keith Vens Sportsmanship Award at the National Grass Court Championships in 2012.

Joslin earned a Gold Medal at the 1999 senior games and Silver and Bronze Balls at the National Men’s 75 Senior competition in 2015 and 2016.
