Mia Yamakita returns to Georgia for AANHPI Tennis Festival
Mia Yamakita has had quite the journey in the world of tennis. After first picking up a racquet at just two years old, Yamakita went on to become Georgia’s No. 1 junior, compete on the ITF and WTF pro circuits (ranking as high as No. 901 in singles and No. 575 in doubles), qualify for the 2023 US Open Junior Championships, and now compete at the Division I level for Vanderbilt University.
But for Yamakita, 2023 USTA Southern Dewitt Redgrave III Junior Achievement Award recipient, tennis has always meant more than competition alone.
“Tennis is more than just a sport to me; it’s been a huge part of my life and identity ever since I was little. It’s taught me how to handle challenges, stay disciplined, and continue growing in the process. Some of my closest relationships and most meaningful experiences have come through tennis, creating unforgettable memories through both wins and losses.”
As the daughter of Asian immigrant parents, Yamakita takes great pride in her background and hopes to be a source of inspiration for others who see themselves reflected in her journey. She grew up in Johns Creek, Ga.
“I am passionate about inspiring younger Asian American athletes to follow their goals, while also continuing to grow as both a competitor and person through tennis.”
Continuing that mission, Yamakita will share her story as a panelist at the USTA Southern AANHPI Tennis Festival (use this link to register) at Hudlow Tennis Center on May 30. Use this link to register.
