Playing in three Atlanta programs, Jean-Marc Lawrence's finds connection in the Pride community

For Jean-Marc Lawrence, tennis is about much more than winning matches.

"Tennis to me is competition and inclusivity," Lawrence said. "Tennis to me means a sense of community coming together and developing a social network to play and compete in the sport we all love."

Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Lawrence works as a medicinal chemist. Although he first picked up a tennis racquet as a child, he didn't fully commit to the sport until joining the Atlanta Team Tennis Association (ATTA) Beginner's Clinic just two years ago. The ATTA mission is to promote and develop the growth of tennis in the LGBTQ+ community of Atlanta, along with their friends and allies.

That experience ignited a passion that quickly led him into Atlanta's vibrant tennis community. Since then, Lawrence, 31, has competed in both USTA League and the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association (ALTA), serving as captain of his men's team for seven seasons (four for USTA League) and his mixed doubles team for the past two. Along the way, he has helped lead multiple division championship teams, including an ALTA City Championship in the 2025 fall season.

Inspired by the opportunities ATTA provided, Lawrence now serves on the organization's Board as New Player Development Coordinator. Through USTA-supported beginner clinics, drills, open play sessions and tournaments, he helps introduce new players to the game while fostering an inclusive environment where LGBTQ+ players, allies and friends can learn, compete and build lasting friendships.

"ATTA not only introduced me to the sport but also connected me more deeply with Atlanta's LGBTQ+ community," Lawrence said. "Helping others begin their own tennis journeys and creating a welcoming space where everyone can be themselves is incredibly rewarding."

For Lawrence, giving back to the community that helped launch his own tennis journey is just as meaningful as any championship title. What began as a beginner's clinic has grown into a passion for mentoring others and strengthening the inclusive community that first welcomed him to the sport.

Lawrence hopes every player who walks through ATTA's doors finds more than just a place to play tennis; they find a community where they are supported, celebrated and encouraged to be their authentic selves. For him, the true power of tennis is creating lifelong connections, opening doors to new opportunities and ensuring that everyone has a place to belong, both on and off the court.
