Middle States Staff Openings: 

 

USTA Middle States Sport Management Intern: Tournaments & Special Events

 

OVERVIEW: The United States Tennis Association (USTA) Middle States section, based in Valley Forge, Pa., is looking for a sport management intern for summer 2024. Interns in this position will report to the Marketing and Communications Manager and work closely with USTA staff to execute projects involving USTA League and the USTA Pro Circuit event in Landisville, Pa. The majority of the work will be done virtually and at events. An interest in public relations, marketing, communications, or event management is required.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Content Development - Assist in the processes of creating original content, including writing, photography and graphic design

  • Marketing – Assist in promoting events and programs. 

  • Media and publications - Assist in growing media and contributing to online and print publications.

  • Event Management - Assist with event planning of Middle States-sponsored events.

    • This includes heavy involvement with media assistance for the Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge, a week-long USTA Pro Circuit event. The intern will also contribute to all other USTA Pro Circuit events that take place during the summer months.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current enrollment in a college or university (and ability to take the internship for credits)

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal communications skills

  • Experience or interest in photography

  • Computer experience in Microsoft Office platform; interest in the Adobe Creative Suite

  • Strong editing skills

  • Ability to keep deadlines, handle tasks responsibly and work independently

  • Interest in, and knowledge of, one or more of the following fields: journalism, marketing, public relations, sports management

 

OTHER DETAILS:

  • May through September – with a flexible start date.

  • Candidate must be available for at least 12 hours per week, for a 10-week period.*

  • Candidate must be available to work weekend events when needed (willing to work extra hours. during the Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge event at Hempfield recCenter in Landisville, Pa.).

    • Koser Jeweler Tennis Challenge (August 5-11)

    • USTA League Section Tournaments (May 31 - June 2, June 7-9)

    • USTA League District Tournaments (July 26-28, August 2-4, 23-25)

  • Candidate must have a valid driving license and reliable transportation.

  • USTA Middle States will work with the college or university to provide course credit. This internship is unpaid.

*Hours per week and duration of internship are negotiable, for the right candidate, based on the student's needs.

Middle States District Opportunities: 

 

After School Tennis Program Coordinator for EPD (Part-Time, Temporary)

Greater Lehigh Valley Area (PA) 

 

OVERVIEW: The USTA Middle States Eastern Pennsylvania District (EPD) is searching for a part-time, temporary tennis instructor to lead after school programming. This individual will be responsible for teaching tennis in after-school programs up to four days per week (~two hours per session) for up to eight weeks. This individual will collaborate with USTA Middle States staff and volunteers to ensure the proper planning, implementation and execution of this new program.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Tennis Instruction: Provide engaging and effective tennis instruction to participants in after-school programs, following USTA guidelines, curriculum and utilizing USTA software. Must be able to implement Red Ball instruction, drills and activities in non-traditional spaces (for example, inside a gym, or on a blacktop area).

  • Program Development: Collaborate with USTA Middle States staff and key volunteers to contribute ideas and strategies for the development and improvement of the tennis program.

  • Program Execution: Run tennis programming 2-4 days per week, ensuring a safe and positive learning environment for participants. Be able to engage, and instruct upwards of 20 participants at a time.

  • Communication: Maintain clear and effective communication with USTA Middle States staff, volunteers, and participants.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Tennis Expertise: Strong knowledge and skills in tennis instruction, with a passion for sharing the sport with others. Must be able to work effectively with large groups of beginner players in a non-traditional area (i.e. gym, hallway, blacktop). Professional certification is preferred.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with participants, staff, and volunteers.

  • Flexibility: Flexibility to adapt to the needs of the program and participants.

  • Availability: Able to commit to a 2-4 day per week schedule for the 8-week duration.

  • Safe Play: Must be USTA Safe Play approved prior to the beginning of employment.
