Jayaraman, Nguyen triumph at 2023 USTA Boys’ and Girls’ 18s Winter Nationals

January 04, 2024

Unseeded and looming, indeed. Eighteen-year-old Saahith Jayaraman and 16-year-old Alexis Nguyen were the surprise champions at last week's USTA Boys' and Girls' 18s National Winter Championships, the last of five USTA National Championship events in 2023.

Both Jayaraman and Nguyen, each natives of El Dorado Hills, Calif. who train at the same academy in Sacramento, were unseeded and knocked off multiple seeded players en route to winning a coveted USTA gold ball. Both events were held simultaneously at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. from Dec. 28-Jan. 3.

Jayaraman's notable wins over the course of the event were over No. 7 seed Aidan Atwood in the third round and No. 4 seed Ronin Kasday in the quarterfinals before defeating No. 17 seed Niels Hoffmann in the final, 6-2, 6-4. Nguyen, meanwhile, was leading No. 2 seed Aspen Schuman 7-5, 4-1 in the semifinals when the latter retired due to illness. She won an all-unseeded final against another 16-year-old, Utah's Anna Frey, 6-4, 6-2.

Jayaraman, a high school senior, is committed to play college tennis at Duke University next fall, while Nguyen, a sophomore, is considered one of the top prospects in the country in her class. In 2022, she was the 16-and-under champion at the prestigious Orange Bowl in Plantation, Fla.

Also in Orlando, Nischal Spurling (Los Angeles) and Bella Payne (Bradenton, Fla.) won the boys’ and girls’ 16s singles title, respectively.

Meanwhile, on the campus of UTSA in San Antonio, Andrew Johnson (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) was the only champion to sweep titles as he won both the boys’ 14s singles and doubles events, while Anjani Vickneswaran (Surprise, Ariz.) won the girls’ 14s singles title. Jiarui Zhang (Houston) and Daniela Del Mastro (Maple Grove, Minn.) rounded out the singles champions, winning the boys’ and girls’ 12s titles, respectively.
