Marketing & Communications Specialist

Department: Marketing

Supervisor: Sr. Manager, Marketing

Location: Alameda office with the option to telecommute 3 days per week


Job Summary

  • Implement marketing tactics to bring greater awareness to USTA Northern California’s programs, services, initiatives and brand. This role will apply numerous marketing tactics to accomplish our objectives, including emails, events, social media, website and promotional materials. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Research, write and edit copy for emails, reports, blogs/feature stories, website pages, marketing collateral, videos and more.
  • Collaborate with the internal teams to execute communication strategies across a variety of channels.
  • Maintain and update the website regularly, including executing day-to-day staff requests, USTA National updates, developing new website pages and blogs and creating basic graphics/photos to supplement website design.
  • ​​Help develop marketing messaging and outreach for a diverse range of audiences.
  • Develop, post and monitor social media content on (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.) to improve the visibility of USTA Northern California.
  • Email marketing efforts including, content production, email design setup, distribution, list maintenance and produce analytics to share with the marketing team.
  • Conduct interviews with various tennis players and industry professionals to produce content and marketing materials across a variety of channels.
  • Collaborate on the creation of an editorial calendar that maps to the overall organization’s goals, help maintain the calendar with deadlines and launch dates and implement strategies to ensure campaign deliverables are met.
  • Implement basic design skills to create social media graphics to align with content.
  • Attend events for photo and video coverage for use on social media and create content resources for USTA Northern California’s emails/newsletters, website and collateral.
  • Curate and co-manage a library of photos and videos.
  • Support USTA NorCal’s communications efforts around public relations, as well as USTA National communication initiatives.
  • Ensure the execution of communication strategies that engage and connect the NorCal tennis community.
  • Assist in helping plan and manage key annual USTA Northern California events and coordination, ordering and shipping of marketing materials, inventory and organizing of materials.
  • Assist with video production as needed for the organization and/or help manage external contractors for video editing.
  • Track and analyze the performance of the various communication strategies and iterate to optimize results as needed.

Adult Leagues Coordinator

Department: Adult Competition

Supervisor: Sr. Manager, Adult Competition

Location: Alameda office with the option to telecommute 3 days per week           



Job Summary:

Coordinates USTA league programs that are played throughout the Northern California section. 

Responsible for organizing and completing administrative and customer service duties. Work at adult league events in the field. Help grow and maintain our Adult League tennis program.


Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Provide excellent customer service to those inquiring about an adult leagues program question in a timely and professional manner. Listen to and empathize with queries.
  • Apply and explain league rules and regulations (e.g. USTA, Section, Friend at Court).
  • Understand and communicate the NTRP rating program including calculation methodology.
  • Work with national reports, input data into the NorCal CMS software system, and relay information to players as needed.
  • Coordinate and manage many aspects of league championship events, including site logistics, scheduling match play, coordinating staff and volunteers, manage event preparations and help order and coordinate award inventory; coordinate league championship events and at times act as the on-site tournament director.
  • Help create online schedules for all leagues, including local league, playoffs and championships utilizing Section and National league management programs.
  • Work closely with marketing to maintain the USTA website for current league content.
  • Work proficiently in all software and database programs used in Adult Leagues including both National TennisLink and NorCal’s league computer programs. 
  • Assist with webinars and workshops so we can host more webinars for LACs and captains
  • Maintain NorCal league database for accuracy, including calendars, team registrations, team rosters, and player information.
  • Understand the structure of all league programs and back-up other League Coordinators
  • Provide support to Adult League Committee volunteers
  • Administer rating and medical appeals and help to administer grievance and appeal submissions
  • Create reports using large databases
  • Coordinate referee and insurance requests from captains and players
  • Respond to the needs of Local Area League Coordinators/Volunteers, club managers, adult players and captains
  • Communicate constantly with current and potential league players, in written and verbal form.

Adult Tournament Specialist

Department: Adult Competition

Supervisor: Sr. Manager, Adult Competition

Location: Alameda office with the option to telecommute 3 days per week           



Job Summary:

Coordinate and handle logistics and administrative details for USTA NorCal Adult-sanctioned tournaments and team events. Act as a knowledgeable and accessible point person to providers, players, and others.


Maintain and foster relationships with internal and external staff, volunteers, and partners to help develop and grow adult tournaments. Support all tournaments that count for ranking points and ratings, quality control of tournaments, customer service to Member Organizations, players, volunteers, and coaches. 



Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Oversee, coordinate, and administer all details related to the sanctioning of USTA NorCal adult tournaments, team events, and other formats.
  • Administer the sanctioning process and manage all documents submitted by Member Organizations to apply to host adult tournaments.
  • Ensure all Member Organizations are adhering to the Sanction Rules & Guidelines and Adult Tournament rules.
  • Act as a tournament director when necessary. Help guide team members and others to run a successful event.
  • Provide general insight and information to the Sr Manager about adult tournaments monthly and annual budgets.
  • Understand and educate Tournament Directors about how to utilize Serve Tennis.
  • When assigned as a Staff Liaison, establish productive working relationships with committee chairs and members, and assist with facilitating committee meetings.
  • Facilitate educational workshops for Tournament Directors and Member Organizations.
  • Knowledgeable about all USTA adult programs and the impact they have in the section.
  • Knowledgeable about the pathway from junior competition to adult competition.

Local Area Coordinator

A Local Area Coordinator (LAC) is a volunteer position that serves the Adult League program and is the primary contact via email for league players throughout their designated area. LACs help players understand and implement the USTA NorCal rules, are available for questions and suggestions, assist players in finding a team, help captains put together teams/initiate new teams, and help solve problems at the grass-roots level. You can also see LACs volunteering at championship events and working hand in hand with USTA NorCal Adult League Staff.
