USTA Missouri Valley National Tennis Month Recap
May was a happening month in the USTA Missouri Valley!
Throughout the section, 11 National Tennis Month proclamations were received and presented (all can be found here), and about 100 events were held (all can be found here). That included three registered cardio tennis events as part of Hit To Be Fit Day on May 19. The section also awarded 27 National Tennis Month grants in 2024 totaling $6,375.00.

May 10-11
The Heartland Wheelchair tournament was held in Overland Park, Kan. Before the doubles on Saturday, USTA Heart of America Executive Director Rebecca Falkner Axelrod presented a State of Kansas National Tennis Month proclamation.

May 18-20
Prairie Village, Kan. played host to a Level 2 this May with many USTA Missouri Valley players competing. Pictures from this event can be found here.
May 19
More than 50 players attended Hit to be Fit Day at Plaza Tennis Center. The event concluded with a raffle for prizes and a presentation of the Kansas City, Mo. National Tennis Month proclamation. Pictures from the event can be found here.

May 16
Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a proclamation about National Tennis Month with a delegation led by USTA Iowa Executive Secretary Mark Blume in attendance. You can find this proclamation and others by clicking here.
May 25
About 60 kids attended the grant-funded Kids Tennis Festival hosted by The University of Iowa Recreational Services in conjunction with the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union State Tennis Tournament. Read more about this event here.
May 8
The county of Sedgwick issued a National Tennis Month proclamation.
May 31
The Kansas State Games—part of Special Olympics Kansas—kicked off May 31 at Maize High School. The State of Kansas proclamation of National Tennis Month was read. Learn more about this event here. A preview from KFDI 101.3 can be found here. Coverage of the event from KWCH-TV can be found here.
May 4-5
The City of Rolla held a weekend of tennis festivities. On May 4, clinics, games and social play were held for children. The following day a red ball tournament was held. Read more about this tennis-filled weekend here.
May 10
Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield hosted a Family Night tournament. At this event the Springfield Mayor Pro Tem, Matthew Simpson, read a National Tennis Month proclamation from the city. Learn more about this event here.

May 16-17 and May 20-21
The Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) Girls State Tennis Championships took place in May with Lincoln East and Elkhorn North dominating in their respective classes. Read more about the results here.
May 19
Play Tennis Lincoln Day was held at Woods Tennis Center. Despite the rain, more than 40 people showed up to partake in the tennis fun. Read more about this event here.
May 20
Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen signed a proclamation in the Nebraska State Capitol’s Warner Chamber that declared May as National Tennis Month in the state. USTA Missouri Valley Executive Director Mary Buschmann spoke at the proclamation signing. Read more about this proclamation here. May 26-27
The MoKanNeb Tournament Series kicked off in Omaha, Neb. during Memorial Day weekend. Learn more about this tournament here.
May 15-16
Tennis was featured for the first time at Special Olympics Oklahoma in the summer games. Read more about this here.
May 16 - 25
Both the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Division I Tennis Championships were held at Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater. Read an article on the DI and DIII championships both taking place within the UTSA Missouri Valley here.
May 19
The Oklahoma City Tennis Center, a venue that has allowed programs like First Serve to flourish and impact the area, was featured in The Oklahoman.
May 24 - 26
The 48th rendition of the North American Indian Tennis Association (NAITA) National Championships took place from May 24 - 26 this year.

May 6
The East St. Louis Community Tennis Association partnered with USTA St. Louis to donate tennis racquets, tennis balls and activity coloring books to fourth-grade students at Dunbar Elementary School in East St. Louis as part of a Black Tennis Heroes event.
A proclamation from the City of East St. Louis declaring May as National Tennis Month was presented by East St. Louis City Manager Robert Betts.
May 16-18
The 2024 Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Boys’ Tennis State Championships took place at Springfield’s Cooper Tennis Complex this May, and several local teams and individuals had standout showings. May 20 - 28
Both the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Division III Tennis Championships were held at Dwight Davis Tennis Center. Read an article on the DIII and DI championships both taking place within the UTSA Missouri Valley here.
May 25
With a USTA Missouri Valley grant, the East St. Louis Community Tennis Association was able to resurface three courts at Lincoln Park. More information can be found here and here.
